Somerton, Newport
Somerton is an area in the south-east of Newport. The northern half of the area is located in the Alway ward with the southern half in the Lliswerry ward – The two halves being separated by the Great Western Main Line. Somerton has a local Primary School and Post Office and is the location of St Patricks RC Church. Somerton is perhaps best known for Somerton Park – the former home of professional football and speedway in Newport with Newport County and the Newport Wasps. Alway
Alway is an electoral district (ward) and coterminous community (formerly civil parish) of the city of Newport. The ward is bounded by the Great Western Main Line to the south, Windsor Road, Chepstow Road and Beechwood Road to the west, the M4 motorway to the north, and a line running between Glanwern Grove, Ringwood Hill, Ringland Circle, Aberthaw Road, and Balfe Road to the east. The area is governed by the Newport City Council. The ward contains the Alway estate itself plus Somerton and the eastern fringes of Beechwood around Beechwood Park. It is also home to Ladyhill Reservoir, a 22.5 ML treated water storage facility that serves the east of the city. All the roads in the Alway Estate are named after famous composers. Lliswerry
Lliswerry ( cy, Llyswyry), or Liswerry is an electoral district (ward) and community of the city of Newport, South Wales. The area is governed by Newport City Council. It is the largest community/ward in the city. History and origins Lliswerry has been well known across the city for the railway bridge over Somerton Road with 'This is Lliswerry with 2 L's' painted in white across it. Lliswerry is an anglicised version of the Welsh place name ''Llyswyry'' translating to Maiden's Court. (''Llys'' - Court, ''Gwyryf'' > ''Wyryf'' > ''Wyry'' - Maiden). Great Western Main Line
The Great Western Main Line (GWML) is a main line railway in England that runs westwards from London Paddington to . It connects to other main lines such as those from Reading to Penzance and Swindon to Swansea. Opened in 1841, it was the original route of the first Great Western Railway which was merged into the Western Region of British Railways in 1948. It is now a part of the national rail system managed by Network Rail with the majority of passenger services provided by the current Great Western Railway franchise. The line has recently been electrified along most of its length. The eastern section from Paddington to was electrified in 1998. Somerton Park
Somerton Park was a football, greyhound racing and speedway stadium in Newport, South Wales. Football In April 1912 Newport County had been accepted to play in the Southern League for the 1912–13 season. Shortly afterwards, the site for the ground was obtained by the club's chairman Bert Moss. The stadium was nearly sold for housing in June 1919, but it was bought and transferred to a committee of employees from the John Lysaght's steel works. It remained the home of Newport County through many reformations until the club went bankrupt on 27 February 1989. County's 77 years at the stadium had brought many highs and lows, the most notable being the Welsh Cup and Fourth Division promotion triumph in 1980 and the European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final appearance in 1981, but the final few years brought the trauma of two successive relegations which saw the club lose its Football League status after 68 years, and finally go out of business on 27 February 1989. Newport Wasps
Newport Wasps were a British motorcycle speedway team based in Newport, South Wales from 1964 to 2012. They were the 1999 Conference League champions. The Wasp logo incorporates the traditional black and amber colours of the City of Newport. History 1964–1977 Newport Wasps first competed in the 1964 Provincial Speedway League (division 2), they finished a creditable fourth and also won the division 2 version of the Knockout Cup, when winning the Provincial League Knockout Cup during their debut season. The following season they joined the inaugural British League season (the top division) and would remain in the top division until 1977. The team weas based at the now-defunct Somerton Park stadium, which was also the home of football and greyhound racing. TARDIS
The TARDIS (; acronym for "Time And Relative Dimension In Space") is a fictional hybrid of the time machine and spacecraft that appears in the British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who'' and its various spin-offs. Somerton TARDIS
The Somerton TARDIS is a Police box on Acacia Avenue beside the B4237 road (Chepstow Road) in the Somerton, Newport, Somerton area of Newport, Wales, Newport, South Wales. This police box is the only remaining one of four that were in Newport. It is a Grade II listed building. Police boxes were deployed in the United Kingdom, UK as a police telephone communications point before public telephone boxes were widely available. Patrolling police officers or members of the public could contact the local police station using the telephone accessed via an external flap. Internally, the box was a miniature police station. The Somerton police box has a lamp fixing on top which would flash to indicate an incoming call. The first UK police boxes were deployed in 1888; the familiar 'TARDIS' shape first appeared in 1929.
