Somerset FC
Somerset Football Club, also known as the "Sharks", is a soccer club which represents Somerset in the Tasmanian Northern Championship. The club also fields teams in all junior divisions, as well as women's teams. Somerset play their home games at Somerset Recreation Ground, in Somerset, Tasmania. Somerset Football Club was formed in 1979 by a dedicated soccer player known as Nigel Brown. He wanted to create a club for the Somerset and Wynyard area. They began their life playing home games at Wynyard High School, before relocating to the Somerset Recreation Ground (Shark Park). In 2006 Somerset won the Tasmanian Championship for the first time, having already won the Northern Premier League title. They have subsequently won the Northern Premier League again on seven occasions. Somerset, Tasmania
Somerset is a small township to the west of Burnie, Tasmania, Australia, which shares its name with the County of Somerset, England, UK. Today the city of Burnie encompasses the entire Burnie-Somerset urban area; however, the town is part of the Waratah/Wynyard municipal area. History ''Somerset River Cam'' Post Office opened on 5 November 1864. It was renamed ''Somerset Cam'' around 1934 and ''Somerset'' in 1963. Geography Somerset is located on estuary on the western bank of the Cam River midway between the township of Wynyard and the city of Burnie. The Cam River is the borderline of where the Waratah-Wynyard Council meets the City of Burnie. A beach stretches along the full length of the Somerset coastline from the Cam River to the far western outskirts. Somerset has three parks, each with a playground. The championship has been decided using three different formats; a statewide league, a playoff between Northern and Southern league Champions and lastly a statewide finals system with top teams from Northern and Southern leagues. Formats Tasmanian Statewide League The Tasmanian Statewide League was the highest state-level competition in Tasmania prior to being disbanded in 2000. Nationally, it was on par with Australia's other state leagues, below the National Soccer League.
