''Some People Need Killing: A Memoir of Murder in My Country'' is a 2023 book by journalist Patricia Evangelista, published by Random House. The book documents the thousands of Filipinos killed by extrajudicial death squads and vigilantes during the administration of the president of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte. Narrative The book documents some of the extrajudicial killings of Philippine citizens that occurred during the presidential tenure of Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte from 2016 to 2022, with many killings being conducted by death squads which were emboldened by the president. The Philippine National Police estimates the death toll of the extrajudicial killings at 8,000, with higher estimates of dead as high as 30,000. Patricia Chanco Evangelista is a Filipina journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Manila, whose coverage focuses mostly on conflict, disaster and human rights. She is a multimedia reporter for online news agency Rappler and is a writer-at-large for ''Esquire'' magazine. Education Evangelista finished high school at Saint Theresa's College of Quezon City. Women's Prize For Non-Fiction
The Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction is a prize for non-fiction writing by women, a sister prize to the Women's Prize for Fiction. It was announced in February 2023 and will first be awarded in 2024, for books published in 2023. Its main prize of £30,000 will be funded for three years by the Charlotte Aitken Trust, and the winner will also receive a statuette named the Charlotte. It was announced in June 2023 that the inaugural sponsor of the prize would be the family tree company Findmypast. Kate Mosse, announcing the launch of the prize, said it was "not about taking the spotlight away from the brilliant male writers, it's about adding the women in". The 2016 Philippine presidential and vice presidential elections were held on Monday, May 9, 2016, as part of the 2016 general election. This was the 16th direct presidential election in the Philippines since 1935 and the fifth sextennial presidential election since 1992. Incumbent president Benigno Aquino III was ineligible for re-election, pursuant to the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Incumbent vice president Jejomar Binay was eligible for re-election but chose to run for the presidency instead. Therefore, this election determined the 16th president and the 14th vice president. Davao Death Squad
The Davao Death Squad (DDS) is a vigilante group in Davao City, Philippines. The group is alleged to have conducted summary executions of street children and individuals suspected of petty crimes and drug dealing. It has been estimated that the group is responsible for the killing or disappearance of between 1,020 and 1,040 people between 1998 and 2008. As early as 2005, the US State Department had received reports of investigation regarding the alleged connection of the Duterte political dynasty of Davao to the killings.
