Soma, Gambia
Soma is a town in The Gambia, lying south of the River Gambia. It is an important crossroads, where the main east–west road in the country crosses the Trans-Gambia Highway and it also sits between Northern and Southern Senegal. A vibrant market town and an economic hub of the region, known for its assortments of cooked meat locally known as 'dibitair'. The town has a number of higher learning centers. The town has three Lower Basic Schools; Soma Proper, Soma New and Notre Dame Lower Basic School. Soma Senior Secondary School is located at Sare Mawdo neighborhood of the town and Tahir Senior Secondary School attract thousands of students to the town. Soma has seen a robust response from its citizens living abroad and locally by forming associations to initiate developments to the town. Divisions Of The Gambia
The Gambia is divided into five administrative Regions (until 2007 these were known as "divisions") and one City. The divisions of the Gambia are created by the Independent Electoral Commission in accordance to Article 192 of the National Constitution. Per 2013 census, Western region was the most populated with a population of 699,704, while Lower River was the least populated with 82,361. The maximum density of population was seen in Western with 396.59 persons per km2, while it was lowest in Lower River with 50.90 persons per km2. The maximum number of households was in Western region with 45,396 households as of 2003. Lower River had the highest infant mortality rate of 96 for every thousand births and under-five mortality of 137 per every thousand births. Lower River Division
Lower River Division is one of the five administrative divisions of the Gambia. Its capital is Mansa Konko. The city and area council elections were held during April 2002, when Wally S.M. Sanneh, an APRC candidate became the Mayor, winning unopposed. The council was led by Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), which won all the 12 seats. Per 2013 census, the region had a population of 82,361 with a population density of 051. The total number of households was 8,474 as of 2003. As of 2003, the total area of the region is 1618 km2. The Gambia is subdivided into 43 districts. The Gambia River (formerly known as the River Gambra) is a major river in West Africa, running from the Fouta Djallon plateau in north Guinea westward through Senegal and The Gambia to the Atlantic Ocean at the city of Banjul. Trans-Gambia Highway
The Trans-Gambia Highway is a major highway in The Gambia, running across the centre of the nation in a north–south direction. Within the Gambia, the highway consists of two main stretches, the North Bank Road and South Bank Road, each corresponding to the parts of the country on either side of the Gambia River. The two roads ultimately connect via the Senegambia bridge at the village of Fatoto, at the far eastern end of the country. Prior to the building of the bridge, the crossing was served by a ferry. The road is also economically important for Senegal, in which it is designated as the N4 road.
