Solomon Lewis Withey (April 21, 1820 – April 25, 1886) was a United States federal judge, United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan. Education and career Born in St. Albans (town), Vermont, St. Albans, Vermont, Withey read law to enter the bar in 1843. He was in private practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1843 to 1863. He was a probate judge for Kent County, Michigan, Kent County, Michigan from 1848 to 1852. He was a member of the Michigan Senate from 1861 to 1863. United States Circuit Court
The United States circuit courts were the original intermediate level courts of the United States federal court system. They were established by the Judiciary Act of 1789. They had trial court jurisdiction over civil suits of diversity jurisdiction and major federal crimes. They also had appellate jurisdiction over the United States district courts.
