''Solo'' is a solo piano album by Mulgrew Miller. It was recorded in 2000 and released by Space Time Records a decade later. Recording and music The album was recorded in concert at the Jazz en Tête festival in Clermont-Ferrand in 2000. Miller plays his composition "Carousel" with stride influences. "My Old Flame" and " Body and Soul" are ballads, and other tracks are played at a greater tempo. Releases and reception ''Solo'' was released by Space Time Records in 2010. The ''Financial Times'' described it as "a masterclass in the traditional jazz virtues of harmonic development and unflagging tempo." The ''New York Amsterdam News'' suggested that "it will be the album that fledgling musicians copy and practice by." Mulgrew Miller
Mulgrew Miller (August 13, 1955 – May 29, 2013) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and educator. As a child he played in churches and was influenced on piano by Ramsey Lewis and then Oscar Peterson. Aspects of their styles remained in his playing, but he added the greater harmonic freedom of McCoy Tyner and others in developing as a hard bop player and then in creating his own style, which influenced others from the 1980s on. After leaving university he was pianist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra for three years, then accompanied vocalist Betty Carter. Three-year stints with trumpeter Woody Shaw and with drummer Art Blakey's high-profile Jazz Messengers followed, by the end of which Miller had formed his own bands and begun recording under his own name. He was then part of drummer Tony Williams' quintet from its foundation, while continuing to play and record with numerous other leaders, mostly in small groups. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. ''The Duets'' is a studio album by American jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller and Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. The album was recorded in Copenhagen on the Bang & Olufsen label and released in 1999. The record features famous compositions by pianist Duke Ellington as well as two originals by bandmembers. Their duo later became a trio with the occasional inclusion of drummer Alvin Queen in 2000. "My Old Flame" is a 1934 song composed by Arthur Johnston with lyrics by Sam Coslow for the film ''Belle of the Nineties''. It has since become a jazz standard. History "My Old Flame" first appeared in the 1934 film ''Belle of the Nineties'' when it was sung by Mae West, backed by the Duke Ellington Orchestra. "Jordu" is a jazz standard written by Irving "Duke" Jordan in 1953. This song was first made popular by Clifford Brown and Max Roach, but many other jazz musicians have performed or recorded renditions of it, including Stan Getz, Chet Baker, and Charlie Byrd. It has a traditional AABA jazz form. Yardbird Suite
"Yardbird Suite" is a bebop standard composed by jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker in 1946. The title combines Parker's nickname "Yardbird" (often shortened to "Bird") and a colloquial use of the classical music term " suite" (in a manner similar to such jazz titles as Lester Young's "Midnight Symphony" and Duke Ellington's "Ebony Rhapsody").
