A total solar eclipse occurred on January 22, 1898. Solar Eclipse
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby obscuring the view of the Sun from a small part of the Earth, totally or partially. Such an alignment occurs during an eclipse season, approximately every six months, during the new moon phase, when the Moon's orbital plane is closest to the plane of the Earth's orbit. In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses, only part of the Sun is obscured. Unlike a lunar eclipse, which may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of Earth, a solar eclipse can only be viewed from a relatively small area of the world. Saros cycle series 139 for solar eclipses occurs at the Moon's ascending node, repeating every 18 years, 11 days, containing 71 events. It has 16 partial solar eclipses, 12 will be hybrid and 43 will be total. The first total eclipse occurred on December 21, 1843 over southern Asia and lasted 1 minute and 43 seconds. The last total eclipse will occur on March 26, 2601 over Antarctica and the southern ocean lasting 35 seconds. This series is currently producing total eclipses over 4 minutes long, with each one gradually increasing in length. It will continue to do so until July 16, 2186 when it will produce the longest total eclipse calculated for the ten millennia from 3999 BCE to 6000 CE. Kavasji Naegamvala
Kavasji Naegamvala, also known as Kavasji Dadabhai Naegamvala (1857-1938) (FRAS) was an astrophysicist and the director of the Takhtasingji Observatory. Education Naegamvala received his BA from Elphinstone College, Bombay; he received his MA in physics and chemistry in 1878. He was awarded the chancellor's gold medal, the highest honor of Bombay University. He joined Elphinstone College as lecturer in experimental physics, in 1882. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS), in 1885; and in 1888, he joined the College of Science, Pune, College of Engineering, as professor of astrophysics. Contributions to astrophysics Naegamvala's work included observations of nebulae, solar flash spectrum, and the transit of Mercury on 9 May 1891. The British Astronomical Association (BAA) was formed in 1890 as a national body to support the UK's amateur astronomers. Throughout its history, the BAA has encouraged observers to make scientifically valuable observations, often in collaboration with professional colleagues. Among the BAA's first presidents was Walter Maunder, discoverer of the seventeenth century dearth in sunspots now known as the Maunder Minimum which he achieved by analysing historical observations.
