Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth (; born Isabella Baumfree; November 26, 1883) was an American abolitionist of New York Dutch heritage and a women's rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son in 1828, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man. She gave herself the name Sojourner Truth in 1843 after she became convinced that God had called her to leave the city and go into the countryside "testifying the hope that was in her." Her best-known speech was delivered extemporaneously, in 1851, at the Ohio Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. The speech became widely known during the Civil War by the title "Ain't I a Woman?", a variation of the original speech re-written by someone else using a stereotypical Southern dialect, whereas Sojourner Truth was from New York and grew up speaking Dutch as her first language. Albert Sojourner
Albert Boyd Sojourner (February 4, 1872 - November 17, 1951) was a Democratic member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, representing Adams County from 1916 to 1924. Biography Albert Boyd Sojourner was born on February 4, 1872, in Kingston, Adams County, Mississippi. His father, Absolom Hardy Sojourner, was a Confederate Civil War veteran and member of the Jeff Davis Cavalry Legion. Albert was the Justice of the Peace in Adams County, District No. 2, from 1909 to 1915, and was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives, representing his native Adams County, in 1915. He was then re-elected in 1919. He died on November 17, 1951. Personal life He married Kate Aubrey Bailey in 1907, and she died in 1915. Melanie Sojourner (born January 5, 1968) is an American politician from the state of Mississippi. She serves in the Mississippi State Senate, representing the 37th district. She is a member of the Republican Party. She was born in Centreville, Mississippi, and was raised in Kingston, Mississippi. She is the great-granddaughter of Albert Boyd Sojourner, who was in the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1916. She attended Adams County Christian School, which was founded as a segregation academy and uses the Confederate flag as its symbol, and has enrolled her daughter there. Michael Sojourner (born October 16, 1953) is a retired American professional basketball player born in Germantown, Pennsylvania. A 6'9" (2.05 m) power forward / center from the University of Utah, Sojourner played three seasons (1974–1977) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Atlanta Hawks, where he played his entire professional career. Willie Sojourner
Willard Leon Sojourner (September 10, 1948 – October 20, 2005) was an American collegiate and professional basketball player and international coach. He played collegiately at Weber State University and went on to a professional career, winning a championship with the New York Nets and playing overseas. The Italian arena PalaSojourner is named in his honor. Sojorner is known for giving his friend and teammate Julius Erving his famous "Dr. J." nickname. ''Sojourner'' is a robotic Mars rover that landed in the Ares Vallis channel in the Chryse Planitia region of the Oxia Palus quadrangle on July 4, 1997. ''Sojourner'' was operational on Mars for 92 sols (95 Earth days). It was the first wheeled vehicle to rove on a planet other than Earth and formed part of the ''Mars Pathfinder'' mission. The rover was equipped with front and rear cameras, and hardware that was used to conduct several scientific experiments. ''Mars Pathfinder'' (''MESUR Pathfinder'') is an American robotic spacecraft that landed a base station with a roving probe on Mars in 1997. It consisted of a lander, renamed the Carl Sagan Memorial Station, and a lightweight, wheeled robotic Mars rover named ''Sojourner'', the first rover to operate outside the Earth–Moon system.
