Sohar Airport
Sohar International Airport , is an international airport situated in the wilayat of Sohar in Al Batinah Region of Oman. Sohar is a coastal city on the Gulf of Oman. The airport is inland from the shore. The runway length does not include displaced thresholds on both ends. The Fujairah VOR-DME (Ident: FJR) is located north-northwest of the airport. Construction The airport was built in three packages. Package 1 included site preparation, package 2 included the infrastructure works, and package 3 included construction of airport facilities. The construction of the airport cost 100 million rials to build. A temporary airport was opened on 18 November 2014 before the completion of the passenger terminal building. Suhar
Sohar ( ar, صُحَار, also Romanized as Suḥār) is the capital and largest city of the Al Batinah North Governorate in Oman. An ancient capital of the country that once served as an important Islamic port town, Suhar has also been credited as the mythical birthplace of Sinbad the Sailor. According to the 2010 census, Suhar's population was 140,006, making it Oman's fifth most-populated settlement. Described as an industrial town, the development of the Sohar Industrial Port during the 2000s has transformed it into a major Omani industrial hub. Al Batinah Region
Al-Bāţinah ( ar, ٱلْبَاطِنَة) was one of the regions ''( Mintaqat)'' of Oman. On 28 October 2011, Al-Batinah Region was split into Al Batinah North Governorate and Al Batinah South Governorate. The region occupied an important location on the coast of Gulf of Oman. It lay between Khatmat Malahah in the north and Ras al-Hamra in the south, and confined between Al Hajar Mountains in the west and the Gulf of Oman in the east. Most of Oman's population were in that region, because of the green plains between the Hajar Mountains and the sea. Al Batinah Region contained the largest number of provinces (''wilayat''), numbering twelve: Sohar, Ar Rustaq, Shinas, Liwa, Saham, Al-Khaburah, Suwayq, Nakhal, Wadi Al Maawil, Al Awabi, Al-Musannah, Barka. A wilayah ( ar, وَلاية, wālāya or ''wilāya'', plural ; Urdu and fa, ولایت, ''velâyat''; tr, vilayet) is an administrative division, usually translated as "state", "province" or occasionally as " governorate". VOR-DME
In radio navigation, a VOR/DME is a radio beacon that combines a VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) with a distance-measuring equipment (DME). The VOR allows the receiver to measure its bearing to or from the beacon, while the DME provides the slant distance between the receiver and the station. Together, the two measurements allow the receiver to compute a position fix. The VOR system was first introduced in the 1930s, but didn't enter significant commercial use until the early 1950s. It became much more practical with the introduction of low-cost Solid state (electronics), solid state receivers in the 1960s. DME was a modification of World War II-era navigation systems like Gee-H, and began development in 1946.
