Soenarto Soemoprawiro
Sunarto Sumoprawiro (10 November 1944 – 17 February 2003) was an Indonesian politician and retired army officer who was the mayor of Surabaya between 1994 and 2002. Biography Sumoprawiro was born in Surabaya on 10 November 1944, the fourth children of nine. He served in the Special Forces branch (Kopassus) of the Indonesian Army, retiring with the rank of colonel. He was first elected as the mayor of Surabaya on 20 June 1994, and was reelected for a second term on 7 February 2000 with the support of the National Awakening Party. During his time as mayor, he also was the president of the football club Persebaya. He also came up with the idea for and initiated the construction of the Al-Akbar Mosque, the second largest mosque in Indonesia. In June 2000, he was elected first chairman of the newly formed Association of Indonesia Municipalities or Indonesian City Governments' Association (APEKSI). Al-Akbar Mosque
Al-Akbar Mosque (; ; ), also known as Great Mosque of Surabaya, is a national mosque located in Surabaya, East Java. It is the second largest mosque in Indonesia after Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta in terms of maximum capacity. The location of the mosque is beside the Surabaya-Porong Highway Road. Its most distinctive feature is its large vertical dome, accompanied by four small blue domes. It also has a minaret with height of 99 meters, an ode to the 99 Names of Allah. The groundbreaking was initiated on August 4, 1995, after the idea by Soenarto Soemoprawiro, the Mayor of Surabaya at the time. Poernomo Kasidi (22 September 1933 – 15 December 1996) was an Indonesian politician and military officer who was the mayor of Surabaya between 1984 and 1994. He served in the Indonesian Army, and was a colonel. Biography Kasidi was born in Jakarta on 22 September 1933. He studied medicine in the University of Indonesia and later at Gadjah Mada University, from which he graduated on 1964. He was married to Asih Harsasih and the couple had four children. He served in the Indonesian Army, where he was the chief medical officer of Kodam IX/Udayana between 1975 and 1982, and later at Kodam V/Brawijaya until he became mayor. He was a colonel.
