Society Of Black Lawyers
The Society of Black Lawyers (SBL) was founded in the United Kingdom by Rudy Narayan in 1969, as the Afro-Asian and Caribbean Lawyers Association. By 1981, it was known as its current name. It was co-chaired by Narayan and Sibghat Kadri. It aims to promote the rights and welfare of lawyers Person of color, of colour, as well the rights of people of colour in the community who need legal protection or are facing harassment. Since 1984, its chair has been Peter Herbert (lawyer), Peter Herbert, a retired judge. Sibghat Kadri
Sibghatullah Kadri QC (23 April 1937 – 2 November 2021) was a British barrister and a Chair of the Society of Black Lawyers. He was the country's first Pakistani and Muslim Queen's Counsel barrister. Kadri was born in Uttar Pradesh, British India on 23 April 1937 into a Sunni Muslim family. He was involved in student movements in Karachi, Pakistan before martial law was imposed on the country. When he moved to Britain, Kadri joined the Labour Party and worked for Inland Revenue, the Post Office and BBC Urdu. Person Of Color
The term "person of color" ( : people of color or persons of color; abbreviated POC) is primarily used to describe any person who is not considered "white". In its current meaning, the term originated in, and is primarily associated with, the United States; however, since the 2010s, it has been adopted elsewhere in the Anglosphere (often as person of colour), including relatively limited usage in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, South Africa, and Singapore. In the United States, people of color include African Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islander Americans, multiracial Americans, and some Latino Americans, though members of these communities may prefer to view themselves through their cultural identities rather than color-related terminology. The National Conference of Black Lawyers (NCBL) is an American association, formed in 1968, to offer legal assistance to black civil rights activists, it is made up of judges, law students, lawyers, legal activists, legal workers, and scholars. Noted clients included Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, the Attica Brothers, Geronimo Pratt, Mumia Abu-Jamal, the Ben Chavis and the Wilmington Ten. The organization lobbied against apartheid in South Africa. Political Blackness
The notion of "political blackness" arose in the United Kingdom as an umbrella term to refer to all people in the UK who were likely to experience discrimination based on skin colour; i.e., anyone who was not white. Following increased immigration to the United Kingdom after the Second World War, most non-white immigrants were designated as " coloured". The notion of "political blackness" became a popular concept from the 1970s onwards, but began to fall out of favour by the early 1990s. Although seen as an important frame of reference in Britain in linking prejudice against British Asian and Black British people (especially British African-Caribbean people), its applicability was criticised by some as an imposition not allowing for specific British Asian or Black British prides, or implying that the situation of Asian and Black African-Caribbean British people were the same.
