Socialist Party (Zambia)
The Socialist Party is an opposition party in Zambia. It describes itself as socialist and Marxist–Leninist. The party was launched in March 2018 in a split from Rainbow Party, another Zambian socialist party. It was founded by the journalist and businessman Fred M'membe, who was the party's candidate for president in the 2021 Zambian general election General elections were held in Zambia on 12 August 2021 to elect the President, National Assembly, mayors, council chairs and councillors. Fred M'membe
Fred M'membe (born 11 March 1959) is a Zambian journalist known for his editorship of the ''Zambia Post''. He has received numerous international awards for his reporting. In 2000, the International Press Institute named him one of its World Press Freedom Heroes. Background M'membe was born in Mongu, Barotseland, on 11 March 1959. He went to St John's Secondary School, where he did his junior secondary, and later went to St Francis in Malole, where he completed his senior secondary. He studied accounting at the Copperbelt University. He worked for a time as an accountant before moving into journalism in November 1990. He is also a qualified member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and has a Master in Economic Policy and Planning from the University of Zambia. General elections were held in Zambia on 12 August 2021 to elect the President, National Assembly, mayors, council chairs and councillors. Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development was elected president, defeating incumbent Edgar Lungu of the Patriotic Front. On 16 August, Lungu conceded in a televised statement, sending a letter and congratulating Hichilema. Electoral system The President is elected via the two-round system. Patriotic Front (Zambia)
The Patriotic Front (PF) is a social democratic political party in Zambia. The party was formed by Michael Sata as a breakaway party of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) in 2001 after the President Frederick Chiluba nominated Levy Mwanawasa as its presidential candidate for 2001 elections. The party's main base of support are usually the youth and poor people in urban centres (although this support wavered starting in 2021), as well as members of the Bemba people in Copperbelt Province and Lusaka Province. After several years, the PF gained power in the 2011 general elections, and governed until the 2021 elections. Formation The Patriotic Front was formed as a political party in 2001.
