{{Unreferenced, date=December 2009 The Socialist League (or Forward Group) was a Canadian Trotskyist group formed in 1974 by Ross Dowson and approximately twenty other former members of the League for Socialist Action after their faction was defeated at the 1973 LSA national convention. Dowson had previously been the leader of the LSA. The group published a newspaper, ''Forward'' and soon became better known as the "Forward Readers Group" or the "Forward Group". Dowson and his followers differed with the rest of the Trotskyist movement in Canada through their adoption of a Canadian economic nationalist perspective, influenced by the views of the Waffle, a Marxist tendency within the New Democratic Party (NDP) within which the LSA was active. The Socialist League ( fi, Sosialistiliitto) was a Trotskyist organisation in Finland. It was affiliated to the International Socialist Tendency. From 1995 until 1998 the organisation was known as Communist Youth (Kommunistinuoret). At its founding the Communist Youth was close to the "new" Communist Party of Finland (SKP) but supporters of the SKP left the organisation after the name change. They founded Communist Youth League of Finland in 2000. The Socialist League published the magazines ''Murros'' and ''Antikapitalisti''. Socialist League (Germany)
The Socialist League (german: Sozialistischer Bund) was initiated as a political movement by Gustav Landauer in May 1908 and aimed at "uniting all humans who are serious about realizing socialism." Its original strategy was to achieve socialism through the formation of worker cooperatives and intentional communities. Martin Buber, Erich Mühsam, and Margarethe Faas-Hardegger were early members of Landauer's group, which eventually grew to include about 800 members. During the fall of the Bavarian Soviet Republic in the spring of 1919, Landauer was killed, and the movement was thrown into disarray. It reappeared later as a splinter group of the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany led by Georg Ledebour. The party got 26,418 votes in the May 1924 Reichstag election. The Socialist League ( it, Lega Socialista, LS) was a tiny social-democratic party in Italy, founded by Bobo Craxi on 10 May 2000. The Socialist League was already operating as a faction within the Italian Democratic Socialists (SDI), of which the LS was a founding member in 1998. A year later, Craxi was an unsuccessful SDI candidate in the 1999 European Parliament election, while Claudio Martelli was elected and later appointed SDI deputy leader. In June 2000 both Craxi and Martelli left the SDI. In January 2001 the LS was merged with the Socialist Party to form the New Italian Socialist Party, allied with the centre-right coalition. Craxi was elected president of the new party, while Martelli was nominated spokesperson. The Socialist League was an early revolutionary socialist organisation in the United Kingdom. The organisation began as a dissident offshoot of the Social Democratic Federation of Henry Hyndman at the end of 1884. Never an ideologically harmonious group, by the 1890s the group had turned from socialism to anarchism, and disbanded in 1901. The Socialist League was an organisation inside the British Labour Party, which sought to push it to the left. It was formed in 1932, through a merger between the National ILP Affiliation Committee (NILP) and the Society for Socialist Inquiry and Propaganda (SSIP), and ceased to exist in 1937. Political origins The Society for Socialist Inquiry and Propaganda was created by G. D. H. Cole in June 1931, and principally consisted of guild socialists, including Frank Horrabin and Bill Mellor. Socialist Action is a small Trotskyism, Trotskyist group in the United Kingdom. From the mid-1980s Socialist Action became an entryism, entryist organisation, attempting to work within other organisations, with members using code names and not revealing their affiliation. It maintains a website but no publicly visible formal organisation. The organisation was linked with the 2000–2008 Greater London mayoral administrations of Ken Livingstone, although Livingstone was never a member. Four of Livingstone's key advisers were Socialist Action members; all made the "top 25" in the ''Evening Standard's'' 2007 list of the most influential people in London.
