Socialism In Greece
Socialism in Greece has a significant history, with various activists, politicians and political parties identifying as socialist. Socialist movements in Greece began to form around the early 20th century, including the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) (1920–present), the Socialist Party of Greece (1920-1953) and the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK). Socialist ideology is present within the political party Syriza which forms the current opposition in Greece, also known as the Coalition of the Radical Left. Vasiliki Katrivanou
Vasiliki Koutrivanou ( el, Βασιλική Κατριβάνου; born 24 June 1967) is a Greek psychotherapist, politician and former member of SYRIZA. She studied Psychology and Conflict Resolution at the University of Portland and Law at the University of Athens. She speaks English and French. She joined her student years on the Left and the anti-fascist movement. In June 2012 and January 2015, she was elected MP for Athens B with SYRIZA and renewed her term of office in the September 2015 elections. She was a member of the SYRIZA Human Rights Commission, with a special focus on the oppressed social groups: women, LGBT, Romani people, disabled, immigrants, refugees, prisoners. George Papandreou
George Andreas Papandreou ( el, Γεώργιος Ανδρέας Παπανδρέου, , shortened to ''Giorgos'' () to distinguish him from his grandfather; born 16 June 1952) is an American-born Greek politician who served as Prime Minister of Greece from 2009 to 2011. The United Democratic Left (, ''Eniéa Dimokratikí Aristerá'' (EDA)) was a left-wing political party in Greece, active mostly before the Greek military junta of 1967–74. Austerity
Austerity is a set of political-economic policies that aim to reduce government budget deficits through spending cuts, tax increases, or a combination of both. There are three primary types of austerity measures: higher taxes to fund spending, raising taxes while cutting spending, and lower taxes and lower government spending. Austerity measures are often used by governments that find it difficult to borrow or meet their existing obligations to pay back loans. The measures are meant to reduce the budget deficit by bringing government revenues closer to expenditures. Proponents of these measures state that this reduces the amount of borrowing required and may also demonstrate a government's fiscal discipline to creditors and credit rating agencies and make borrowing easier and cheaper as a result.
