''Social Salvation'' started as an 1898 series of films and slides produced by the Limelight Department of the Salvation Army in Australia. Herbert Booth
Herbert Henry Howard Booth (26 August 1862 – 25 September 1926) was a Salvation Army officer, the third son of five children to William and Catherine Booth (Mumford), who later went on to serve as an independent evangelist. He oversaw the Limelight Department's development and he was the writer and director for '' Soldiers of the Cross''. Early life Herbert, who was born in Penzance, Cornwall, received little formal elementary education but became a student at Allesly Park College and the Congregational Institute at Nottingham. At the age of twenty, Herbert began helping his sister Kate Booth in building up The Salvation Army in France. Two years later, he was given charge of England's cadet officer training. He wrote many songs for The Salvation Army and became a bandmaster and a songster leader. He was the first Salvation Army Officer to use the magic lantern for presentations in England. Joseph Perry (cinematographer)
Joseph Henry Perry (5 August 1863 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, UK – 29 April 1943 in Sydney, Australia) was an English-born New Zealander and Australian cinematographer, entrepreneur and Salvation Army officer. Born to Joseph Perry Sr. and Eliza Hall, his sons Orizaba, Reginald and Stanley also went on to have careers in the Australian film industry. Perry helped establish Australia's first film studio in Melbourne, and went on to make several early multi media presentations for the Army's Limelight Department including with Herbert Booth, '' Soldiers of the Cross''. Perry was responsible for capturing the first ever inauguration of a nation (Australia) recorded on film in history. Perry initiated the setting up of Salvation Army Biorama companies with projection equipment and electric generators, to travel around the country giving presentations. Limelight Department
The Limelight Department was one of the world's first film studios, beginning in 1898, operated by The Salvation Army in Melbourne, Australia. The Limelight Department produced evangelistic material for use by the Salvation Army, including lantern slides as early as 1891, as well as private and government contracts. In its 19 years of operation, the Limelight Department produced about 300 films of various lengths, making it one of largest film producers of its time. Beginnings The Salvation Army Limelight Department unofficially started in 1891, when Adjutant Joseph Perry started a photographic studio in Ballarat, Victoria, to supplement the income of the Salvation Army's Prison Gate Home.
