The Social Democratic Party (french: Parti social-démocrate, PSD) was a centrist political party in France. Originally named Democratic Socialist Movement of France (''Mouvement démocrate socialiste de France'', MDSF), the party was founded in 1973, by a split from the Socialist Party (PS). Its founders (among them Max Lejeune, André Santini, Pierre-Cristophe Baguet, Charles Baur, Émile Muller, Joseph Klifa and Auguste Locoeur) opposed to the alliance with the French Communist Party (PCF) arranged by François Mitterrand on behalf of the PS based on the '' Common Programme''. In 1978, the PSD joined the Union for French Democracy (UDF), the centre-right confederation created in order to support President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. Centrism is a political outlook or position involving acceptance or support of a balance of social equality and a degree of social hierarchy while opposing political changes that would result in a significant shift of society strongly to the left or the right. Both centre-left and centre-right politics involve a general association with centrism that is combined with leaning somewhat to their respective sides of the left–right political spectrum. Union For French Democracy
The Union for French Democracy (french: Union pour la démocratie française, UDF) was a centre to centre-right political party in France. It was founded in 1978 as an electoral alliance to support President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in order to counterbalance the Gaullist preponderance over the political right in France. This name was chosen due to the title of Giscard d'Estaing's 1976 book, ''Démocratie française''. The party brought together Christian democrats, liberal-radicals, and non-Gaullist conservatives, and described itself as centrist. Democratic Force (french: Force Démocrate, FD) was a centrist political party in France founded in 1995 by the merger between the centrist components of the Union for French Democracy (UDF): the Christian-democratic Centre of Social Democrats and the Social Democratic Party. The party disappeared in 1998, when the UDF confederation became a unified political party. Christian democracy (sometimes named Centrist democracy) is a political ideology that emerged in 19th-century Europe under the influence of Catholic social teaching and neo-Calvinism. Valéry René Marie Georges Giscard d'Estaing (, , ; 2 February 19262 December 2020), also known as Giscard or VGE, was a French politician who served as President of France from 1974 to 1981. The Programme commun (or 'Common Programme') was a reform programme, signed 27 June 1972 by the Socialist Party, the French Communist Party and the centrist Radical Movement of the Left, which provided a great upheaval in the economic, political and military fields in France. That alliance opened a political repositioning for the left that lasted 30 years, contributing particularly to the election of François Mitterrand in the presidential election of 1981. Between 1981 and 1983, he began putting ''Programme commun'' into action. The Keynesian-inspired policies led to an increase in the fiscal deficit and the trade deficit. To keep France in the European Monetary System, a different approach was needed.
