Soares Dos Reis National Museum
Soares dos Reis National Museum ( pt, Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis) is a museum, currently housed in the Carrancas Palace situated in the civil parish of Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau e Vitória, in the northern Portuguese city of Porto. Founded in 1833, it is the first Portuguese national museum exhibiting collections of Portuguese art, including a collection by Portuguese sculptor António Soares dos Reis, from which the museum derives its name. History The museum was founded in 1833 as ''Museum Portuense'' by King Peter IV. Initially it was housed in the Convent of Santo António (in the centre of Porto), exhibiting religious art confiscated from Portuguese convents, and those works of art expropriated from the absolutist followers of Miguel I (who had struggled against Peter IV a year before). António Carvalho da Silva (11 November 1850 – 1 June 1893), known as Silva Porto, was a Portuguese people, Portuguese naturalist painter. Biography Born in Porto, he studied there under João António Correia and Tadeu de Almeida Furtado, then continued his studies in Paris and Rome. While in Paris he exhibited his work in the Salon (Paris), Salon and in the Exposition Universelle (1878), World's Fair of 1878. In Paris, he studied with his friend João Marques de Oliveira, where they were pupils of Adolphe Yvon and Alexandre Cabanel. They became followers of the Naturalist school of painting, naturalist Barbizon School, and brought the new school of painting to Portugal, when they returned in 1879. Silva Porto become one of the most acclaimed naturalist painters of his generation, showing the heritage of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny. António Teixeira Lopes
António Teixeira Lopes (27 October 1866–21 June 1942) was a Portuguese sculptor. Life Teixeira Lopes was the son of sculptor José Joaquim Teixeira Lopes and started learning his art in his father's workshop. In 1882 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts (''Escola de Belas Artes'') in Porto, where he continued his education with celebrated artists like sculptor António Soares dos Reis and painter João Marques de Oliveira. In 1885 he left for Paris, where he entered the École des Beaux-Arts and became a distinguished student. Around 1895, together with his brother, architect José Teixeira Lopes, he built his atelier in Vila Nova de Gaia, which nowadays houses a museum (the Casa-Museu Teixeira Lopes) dedicated to his work. Júlio Resende ( Faro, 10 June 1982) is a Portuguese pianist and composer. He is a pioneer of a unique and new genre called "Fado-Jazz". His improvisation techniques are transversal to his aesthetics, and articulate different musical genres, from Jazz, Fado, Classical Music and even Electronic Music. His first venture into the Fado-Jazz genre was the album tribute to Amália Rodrigues, the "Diva" of portuguese Fado. The album is called ''Amália por Júlio Resende'' launched in 2013. Over the years, Resende has published more records where he develops and explores the possibilities of Fado-Jazz. In 2020 he released the album ''Júlio Resende - Fado Jazz Ensemble'' where he includes the Portuguese guitar to interact musically with a jazz trio. Sofia Martins de Sousa (March 23, 1870 – November 28, 1960) was a Portuguese painter. Biography She was born in Porto, Portugal, the youngest of seven children to Portuguese emigrants António Martins de Sousa and Olinda Peres. The family lived in Brazil and Chile before moving back to Porto, Portugal in 1869. They lived in the Quinta da China near the Douro River in a home bought by her father before he died in 1874, when she was four years old. She was sister of the painter Aurélia de Souza. She began taking lessons with António da Costa Lima. She began studies at the Fine-Arts Academy of Porto, where she was a pupil of João Marques de Oliveira, who greatly influenced her style. In 1898, she moved to Paris to study painting at the Julian Academy, taking courses with Jean-Paul Laurens and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant.
