Snooty At 63
Snooty (July 21, 1948 – July 23, 2017) was a male West Indian manatee, Florida manatee that resided at the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature's Parker Manatee Aquarium in Bradenton, Florida, Bradenton, Florida. He was one of the first recorded captive manatee births, and at age 69, he was the oldest manatee in captivity, and possibly the oldest manatee in the world. Due to his hand rearing from birth, Snooty was never released into the wild and was the only manatee at the museum's aquarium that had regular human interaction. Life history During 1948, Samuel J. Stout, owner of the Miami Aquarium and Tackle Company, acquired a permit from the State of Florida to own a single manatee, a female he had named ''Lady''. The West Indian manatee (''Trichechus manatus''), also known as the North American manatee, is a large, aquatic mammal native to warm coastal areas of the Caribbean, from the eastern US to northern Brazil. Living alone or in herds, it feeds on underwater plants and uses its whiskers to navigate. It is divided into two endangered subspecies, the Florida manatee (''T. m. latirostris'') in the US and the Antillean manatee (''T. m. manatus'') in the Caribbean, both of which face pressure from habitat loss, pollution, and other human activity. KRCU
KRCU at Southeast Missouri State University includes three stations that provide in-depth news and quality music programming to nearly 1.9 million people in its service regions of Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois and the Parkland. KRCU is located in and licensed to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on 90.9 FM, and is a 6,500 watt station. KRCU's signal covers Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Sikeston, Marble Hill, Perryville and several communities in southern Illinois. It signed on with 10 watts of power as a student-run college station in March 1976. In 1981 it increased power to 100 watts, and in 1988 it began transitioning to a public radio format.
