Arthur Snelling
Sir Arthur Wendell Snelling (7 May 1914 – 25 June 1996) was a senior British civil servant and diplomat. He was educated at Ackworth School, Yorkshire, and University College, London. He was Study Group Secretary at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, 1934–1936. He joined the Dominions Office in 1936, and became Private Secretary to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary in 1939. Snelling was Deputy High Commissioner for the UK in New Zealand, 1947–1950, and the Union of South Africa, May 1953–January 1956. Minnesota State Highway 51 (MN 51) is a highway in Minnesota, which runs from its intersection with State Highway 5 (W. 7th Street) in Saint Paul and continues north to its northern terminus at its interchange with Interstate 694 / U.S. Highway 10 in Arden Hills. Highway 51 is also known as Snelling Avenue for most of its route. A small section of the route is known as Montreal Avenue in the "West Seventh" and Highland neighborhoods of Saint Paul, and the northern section in Arden Hills is known as Hamline Avenue. It provides a route for vehicle traffic, as well as the Metro A Line, a Bus rapid transit link operated by Metro. Snelling Avenue is also served by Snelling Avenue station on the Metro Green Line. Geography Snelling is located near the center of Barnwell County at (33.241284, -81.453184). South Carolina Highway 64 passes through the center of town, leading east to Barnwell, the county seat, and west to the east entrance of the Savannah River Site, a nuclear reservation. Snelling (formerly Snelling's Ranch) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Merced County, California, United States. It is located on the north bank of the Merced River north of Merced, at an elevation of . The population was 238 at the 2020 census. History The "Snelling Ranch" post office opened in 1853, was closed for a time during 1861, and changed its name to "Snelling" in 1870. The name is from the Snelling family that operated a way station at the place beginning in 1851. Snelling's zip code is 95369 and its area code is 209. Snelling was the county seat of Merced County from 1857 to 1872. The courthouse constructed in 1857 continued to serve as a justice court until the 1990s. William Joseph Snelling (December 26, 1804 – December 24, 1848) was an American adventurer, writer, poet, and journalist. His short stories about American Indian life were the first to attempt to accurately portray the Plains Indians and among the first attempts at realism by an American writer. Snelling's short story collections were among the earliest in the United States. Snelling was born and educated in Boston, Massachusetts. He moved to the American frontier in Minnesota and, from his late teens to his mid-20s, traded with the American Indians and explored the area. He lived with the Dakota Indians for a time and learned their language and customs. In 1828, Snelling returned to Boston and began a writing career. He wrote for New England periodicals and earned friends and enemies with his opinion pieces on American society. William Alexander Snelling (born 6 August 1997) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was first drafted by Port Adelaide with their first selection and tenth overall in the 2016 rookie draft. He played his only senior AFL game in Port's twenty-three point win against in round 23, 2016 at Metricon Stadium. He was delisted by Port Adelaide at the end of the 2018 AFL season. Barbara Tuttle Snelling (née Weil; March 22, 1928November 2, 2015) served as the List of lieutenant governors of Vermont, 78th lieutenant governor of Vermont from 1993 to 1997. She suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in 1996 while campaigning for governor. She was elected to the Vermont Senate, Vermont State Senate in 1998, where she served until she suffered a second stroke; she resigned in 2002. Josiah Snelling
Colonel Josiah Snelling (1782 – 20 August 1828) was the first commander of Fort Snelling, a fort located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers in Minnesota. He was responsible for the initial design and construction of the fort, and he commanded it from 1820 through 1827. He had a reputation for being tough and fair-minded, but also had a mean temper when he was drunk. His second wife, Abigail Hunt Snelling, extended hospitality to visitors to the fort. She also founded a Sunday School for the fort's children and assisted families from the Red River Colony (the Selkirk Settlement).
