Smoke Rise (band)
Smoke Rise was an American rock band in 1969-1972. In 1970, they created the first American Rock Opera, ''The Survival of St. Joan'', based on a play and a libretto by James Lineberger and produced by Oscar-winner Stephen Schwartz and Dave Blume. The 2-record set concept album with libretto was issued in 1971 by Paramount Records (PAS-9000). Smoke Rise was known as a very melodic group with smooth 3 and 4 part harmonies, guitar solos and fills, and a tight rhythm section that rocked with the best groups of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Notable productions The Buffalo Production of ''The Survival of St. Joan'' set box office records in the fall of 1970 at the Studio Arena Theater in Buffalo, NY. Rock Opera
A rock opera is a collection of rock music songs with lyrics that relate to a common story. Rock operas are typically released as concept albums and are not scripted for acting, which distinguishes them from operas, although several have been adapted as rock musicals. Stephen Lawrence Schwartz (born March 6, 1948) is an American musical theater lyricist and composer. In a career spanning over five decades, Schwartz has written such hit musicals as ''Godspell'' (1971), ''Pippin'' (1972), and ''Wicked'' (2003). The East Village is a neighborhood on the East Side of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It is roughly defined as the area east of the Bowery and Third Avenue, between 14th Street on the north and Houston Street on the south. Gretchen Hoyt Corbett (born August 13, 1945) is an American actress and theater director. She is primarily known for her roles in television, particularly as attorney Beth Davenport on the NBC series ''The Rockford Files'', but has also had a prolific career as a stage actress on Broadway as well as in regional theater. ''The Rockford Files'' is an American detective drama television series starring James Garner that aired on the NBC network from September 13, 1974 to January 10, 1980, and remains in syndication. David Edward Byrd
David Edward Byrd (born April 4, 1941) is an American graphic artist, designer, illustrator and painter. Many of his design are considered to have helped define the look of rock and roll music starting in the 1960s. He is most well known for his poster designs, including his rock posters for the Fillmore East as well as his Broadway theatre posters.
