Smith Street, Darwin
Smith Street is a major street in the Darwin Central Business district of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Smith Street is named after A. H. Smith who was the first surveyor in charge of party number 3 of George Goyder in 1869. Smith Street runs 4.5 kilometres in a north-west to south-east direction on the western side of the Darwin CBD. The street intersects with Daly Street, Knuckey Street and terminates with The Esplanade. Shopping precinct Smith Street is a major retail shopping precinct along with the rest of the Darwin CBD. It is the second largest shopping centre in Darwin with the largest being Casuarina Square. A central feature of Smith Street Mall is a pedestrian only strip between Knuckey Street and Bennett Street. The Supreme Court of the Northern Territory is the superior court for the Australian Territory of the Northern Territory. It has unlimited jurisdiction within the territory in civil matters, and hears the most serious criminal matters. It is around the middle of the Australian court hierarchy. Parliament House, Darwin
Parliament House in Darwin is Australia's newest Parliament Building. It has been the seat of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly since 1994. Parliament House is located on State Square in the centre of Darwin, which is also the administrative centre of the Northern Territory law and government. It features Post modern features and was designed by Architect Tim Rogers, of Meldrum Burrows and Partners Pty Ltd. The Northern Territory Library is housed in Parliament House. State Square was the central square of antebellum Atlanta, Georgia. The original Atlanta Union Depot designed by Edward A. Vincent stood in the middle of the square. Cyclone Tracy
Cyclone Tracy was a tropical cyclone that devastated the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, from 24 to 26 December 1974. The small, developing easterly storm had been observed passing clear of the city initially, but then turned towards it early on 24 December. After 10:00 p.m. ACST, damage became severe, and wind gusts reached before instruments failed. The anemometer in Darwin Airport control tower had its needle bent in half by the strength of the gusts. Residents of Darwin were celebrating Christmas, and did not immediately acknowledge the emergency, partly because they had been alerted to an earlier cyclone ( Selma) that passed west of the city, and did not affect it in any way. The Victoria Hotel, or The Vic as it is commonly known, is a heritage listed pub located in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Built in 1890, it is an important historical building but is currently closed.
