Smith Fork (Colorado)
Smith Fork is a tributary of the Gunnison River that flows in Gunnison County, Colorado, Gunnison and Delta County, Colorado, Delta counties in western Colorado. The river is signed as "Smith Fork Creek" where it goes under Colorado State Highway 92 in Crawford, Colorado. The river begins at the confluence of the North Smith Fork Gunnison River and South Smith Fork in the West Elk Mountains. Smith Fork joins the Gunnison River in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area. East of Crawford, a small dam, called the Smith Fork Diversion Dam, diverts water from Smith Fork and carries it to Crawford Dam, Crawford Reservoir via the Smith Fork Feeder Canal.United States. Colorado State Highway 92
State Highway 92 (SH 92) is a long state highway that runs between the small Colorado communities of Hotchkiss, Colorado, Hotchkiss and Sapinero, Colorado, Sapinero. SH 92's western terminus is at U.S. Route 50 in Colorado, US 50 (US 50) in Delta, Colorado, Delta, and the eastern terminus is at US 50 near Sapinero, Colorado, Sapinero. Route description From SH 92's western terminus at mile 70.919 on US 50 in Delta, it proceeds eastward towards Hotchkiss. In Hotchkiss, it has an intersection with Colorado State Highway 133, SH 133, and then SH 92 turns to travel in a more southeastern direction. Crawford Dam
Crawford Dam (National ID # CO00556) impounds water for Crawford Reservoir in Delta County, Colorado about a mile south of the town of Crawford. The earthen dam was completed in 1962 by the United States Bureau of Reclamation with a height of 162 feet and 580 feet long at its crest. It impounds Iron Creek for irrigation flood control, one element of the Smith Fork Project. The dam is owned by the Bureau and operated by the local Crawford Water Conservancy District. The Colorado River Storage Project is a United States Bureau of Reclamation project designed to oversee the development of the upper Colorado River basin. The project provides hydroelectric power, flood control and water storage for participating states along the upper portion of the Colorado River and its major tributaries. Since its inception in 1956, the project has grown to include the participation of several related water management projects throughout the river's basin. The Town of Crawford is a Statutory Town in Delta County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 403 at the 2020 United States Census. West Elk Mountains
The West Elk Mountains are a high mountain range in the west-central part of the U.S. state of Colorado. They lie primarily within the Gunnison National Forest, and part of the range is protected as the West Elk Wilderness. The range is primarily located in Gunnison County, with small parts in eastern Delta and Montrose counties. The West Elks are surrounded by tributaries of the Gunnison River. The range is bounded on the north by the North Fork of the Gunnison and on the east by the East River, another tributary of the Gunnison.
