Mississippi Highway 540
Mississippi Highway 540 (MS 540) is a state highway through Simpson and Smith counties in central Mississippi. First created in 1958, the highway consists of two segments- one running about from Harrisville to D'Lo and a second road from Mendenhall to Raleigh. Route description The western segment of MS 540 begins in the unincorporated community of Harrisville at an intersection with MS 469. The two-lane road heads through some curves descending in elevation, but eventually settles on an easterly course. MS 540 heads through wooded areas passing a few houses that were built along old alignments of the road. Changing to a slight east northeast heading, the highway crosses through wooded terrain with some rolling hills. The road's course changes back to due east as it changes its name to Jupiter Road and enters the town of D'Lo. Bienville National Forest
Bienville National Forest is a United States National Forest in central Mississippi, named for Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. In descending order of land area, it lies in parts of Scott, Smith, Jasper, and Newton counties and has an area of . The forest is headquartered in Jackson, as are all six National Forests in Mississippi, with local ranger district offices located in Forest, Mississippi. The forest lies within the Southeastern mixed forests ecoregion and supports mixed forests of pine and oak. The upper courses of the Leaf and Strong Rivers flow through the forest. Recreational opportunities include camping, hiking, boating and fishing for bass, bream, and crappie on Marathon Lake and Shongelo Lake. Simpson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. Its western border is formed by the Pearl River, an important transportation route in the 19th century. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,503. The county seat is Mendenhall. Covington County, Mississippi
Covington County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 19,568. Its county seat is Collins. The county is named for U.S. Army officer and Congressman Leonard Covington. History Covington County was established on January 5, 1819, less than two years after Mississippi earned statehood into the Union. The county was one of the first counties established out of the vast non-agricultural lands in the more eastern part of the state. Covington was originally cut out of Lawrence and Wayne Counties, and encompassed what is now Jefferson Davis, Covington, and Jones Counties. In 1823, part of Covington County became Bainbridge County, most likely named after William Bainbridge, who became an American naval hero during the War of 1812. Jones County is in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the population was 67,246. Its county seats are Laurel and Ellisville. Jones County is part of the Laurel micropolitan area. Jasper County is located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. At the 2010 census, the population was 17,062. In 1906, the state legislature established two county courts, one at the first county seat of Paulding in the eastern part of the county and also one at Bay Springs in the west, where the railroad had been constructed. Jasper County is part of the Laurel, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area. Bay Springs growth passed that of Paulding. No roadway connected the two parts of the county until one was built in 1935–1936. Mississippi Highway 902
Mississippi Highway 902 (MS 902, also known as MS 35 Connector) is a state highway in central Mississippi. The route starts at MS 481 in Burns and it travels northeastwards. It travels within the Bienville National Forest and it ends at MS 35 in Lorena. The road was constructed around 1967 and was paved by 1968. The route was signed as MS 902 on state maps by 1998. Route description All of MS 902 is located in Smith County. In 2018, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) calculated 210 vehicles traveling on MS 902 north of County Road 32-A (CO 32-A) on average each day. The road is legally defined in Mississippi Code § 65-3-3, as both MS 902 and MS 35 Connector, but it is signed as MS 902. Mississippi Highway 501 (MS 501) is a state highway in central Mississippi that runs north–south from MS 18 near Sylvarena, Smith County to U.S. Route 80 (US 80) in Forest, Scott County. Most of the highway runs within the Bienville National Forest and it does not junction with any other state highways except at its termini. Route description MS 501 begins at a stop-controlled T intersection to the west of Sylvarnea's town limits. The highway heads north through a mostly wooded area with some homes and fields dotting the surroundings. The road crosses into Bienville National Forest, but the general landscape is similar to what it was outside of the national forest. MS 501 passes through the unincorporated community of Pineville where a general store, a church, and some houses are in the vicinity.
