''Smiling Pets'' is a multi-artist tribute album consisting of experimental/alternative cover versions of Beach Boys songs from ''Pet Sounds'' (1966) and the never-finished ''Smile'' project. It was released exclusively in Japan by Sony Records in March 1998. Background Some song titles differ from how they have been officially published by the Beach Boys. The most prominent of which is "Tones", which is a cover version of the instrumental ''Smile'' track "Holidays". Prior to ''Smiling Pets'', most ''Smile'' material was only sparsely available on the compilation '' Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of The Beach Boys'' (1993). Because "Holidays" had not been officially released until more than a decade later on ''The Smile Sessions'' (2011), it is highly likely that unauthorized bootlegs with erroneous track lists were consulted by ''Smiling Pets'' artists. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. ''MxBx 1998/13,000 Miles at Light Velocity'' is the first live album by Melt-Banana. The album is not a conventional "live" album: it was not recorded at a concert, but live in the studio specially for John Zorn's Tzadik Records during the band's 1998 US tour. Many of the songs are being played in slightly different arrangements than the album versions. It is kind of a "best-of" release but with all the material re-recorded live in the studio. It also features their cover of The Beach Boys' "Surfin' U.S.A.". The album features an untitled hidden track just a few seconds after "Plot in a Pot". This is a noisy instrumental jam with Smelly Mustafa, their tour manager at the time, announcing all of Melt-Banana's tour dates. Van Dyke Parks (born January 3, 1943) is an American musician, songwriter, arranger, and record producer who has composed various film and television soundtracks. He is best known for his 1967 album ''Song Cycle (album), Song Cycle'' and for his collaborations with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys (particularly the album ''Smile (The Beach Boys album), Smile''). "Wonderful" is a song by the American rock band the Beach Boys from their 1967 album ''Smiley Smile'' and their unfinished ''Smile'' project.
