Thomas Smellie (politician)
Thomas Stuart Traill Smellie (February 13, 1849 – May 20, 1925) was an Ontario physician, merchant and political figure. He represented Fort William and Lake of the Woods (1905-1908) and Fort William (1908-1911) in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Conservative member. Smellie was born in Fergus, Canada West, the son of the Reverend George Smellie (1811–1896), and studied at the University of Toronto and McGill University. He married Janet Eleanor Lawrie on 14 April 1879. He came to Prince Arthur's Landing (later Port Arthur) in 1879 and was a town councillor in 1885. He settled in Fort William in 1891, where he became Medical Officer of Health. Smellie was owner of the ''Daily Times-Journal'' from 1901 to 1908. With his brother, A.G.P. Smellie, he owned a number of stores and creameries in the Russell, Manitoba area. William Smellie (obstetrician)
William Smellie (5 February 1697 – 5 March 1763) was a Scottish obstetrician and medical instructor who practiced and taught primarily in London. One of the first prominent male midwives in Britain, he designed an improved version of the obstetrical forceps, established safer delivery practices, and through his teaching and writing helped make obstetrics more scientifically based. He is often called the "father of British midwifery". Early life and education Smellie was born on 5 February 1697 in the town of Lesmahagow, Scotland. He was the only child of Sara Kennedy (1657–1727) and Archibald Smellie (1663/4–1735), a merchant and burgess of the town. Smellie practiced medicine before getting a license, opening an apothecary in 1720 in Lanark. William Robert Smellie ( 1890–1973) was a 20th-century Scottish geologist. He was curator of the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow from 1914. Life He graduated MA BSc from Glasgow University around 1910. From 1911 he was a demonstrator in geology at Glasgow University. There he began assisting Prof John Walter Gregory at the university's Hunterian Museum and replaced him as curator in 1914. He was absent for war duties 1916–1917, serving in the Royal Garrison Artillery until he was invalided out. In 1920 he was joined by Ethel Currie as his assistant. In 1919–1920 he described a previously unidentified species of echinoid in Gilan Province, sending specimens home to the Hunterian. In 1920 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. William Smellie (1740–1795) was a Scottish printer who edited the first edition of the ''Encyclopædia Britannica''. He was also a naturalist and antiquary, who was joint founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, co-founder of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and a friend of Robert Burns. Early life He was born in The Pleasance, in south-east Edinburgh in 1740, the son of Alexander Smellie, architect and master builder, and of his wife, Jean Robertson. He was educated at Duddingston School then Edinburgh High School. Smellie left school at 12 to years old to be apprenticed as a printer to Hamilton, Balfour & Neill in 1752. Rev. Thomas Smellie (pronounced "smiley") ( – ) was a Presbyterian minister and educator in South Australia. History Smellie was sent out to South Australia by the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland to replace Rev. Peter Mercer, minister of the Port Adelaide church on the north-west corner of Marryatt and Leadenhall streets, who had transferred to Victoria to become first acting principal of Ormond College of the University of Melbourne. Smellie arrived aboard ''Irene'' on 21 October 1861 and was formally welcomed by the congregations of the Port Adelaide church on 4 November and Chalmers Church a week later and ordained and inducted into the Port Adelaide church on 16 December 1861. He resigned before the 1865 union which formed the Presbyterian Church of South Australia, but stayed on until replaced by Rev. James Henderson on 18 April 1867. Sir Anthony Stafford Smellie is the Chief Justice of the Cayman Islands. Career Smellie received his LLB from the University of the West Indies in 1975. He was called to the bar in Jamaica, where he served as Clerk of the Courts in Westmoreland from 1976 to 1977. He then worked as Crown Counsel and Assistant Director of Public Prosecution from 1977 to 1983. He was an assistant lecturer at the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica from 1980 to 1983. He moved to the Cayman Islands in 1983, where he served as Principal Crown Counsel and Solicitor General from 1983 to 1992. Justice Smellie was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1991. Robert Gordon "Bob" Smellie (August 23, 1923 – September 29, 2005) was a Canadian politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1959 to 1966, and served as a cabinet minister in the government of Dufferin Roblin. The son of Albert George Smellie and Jessie May Cummings, Smellie was born in Russell, was educated at Brandon College and the Manitoba Law School, and worked as a barrister at law before entering politics. Robert Martin Stuart Smellie FRSE FIB (1927–1988) was a 20th-century Scottish biochemist and first Cathcart Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Glasgow. The university's Smellie Prize is named after him. Life He was born in Rothesay on 1 April 1927, the son of Rev William Thomas Smellie, the local minister, and his wife, Jean Craig. He was educated at the High School of Dundee and Glasgow Academy. He graduated B.Sc from the University of St Andrews in 1947 but was then asked to serve two years National Service.
