Smeller (installation)
Smeller (since 2012: Smeller 2.0) is an installation by the Berlin-based artist Wolfgang Georgsdorf, which as an instrument and medium enables the composing and precise broadcasting or performance of complex scent sequences. These can also be synchronized with simultaneously reproduced sounds, films, narrative texts, dance or theatre. History The first mechanically controllable prototype of a scent ‘organ’ (in the sense of a musical instrument) was invented by Wolfgang Georgsdorf in 1990 and demonstrated for the first time in the Oberösterreichisches Landesmuseum. Georgsdorf thus realized a time-based art form he called Osmodrama in order to enable the exploration and performance of olfactory sequences and ‘chords’. The instrument is used for staging, programming, recording and playback. Wolfgang Georgsdorf
Wolfgang Paul Georgsdorf (born 10 September 1959 in Linz, Austria) is an Austrian media artist, director, sculptor, musician, author, researcher, and inventor based in Berlin. He was founder and spokesman of Opal-so-nicht which resulted in a successful case against Gazprom and BASF in Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park, Brandenburg, Germany. Education Georgsdorf was educated at the University of Art and Design Linz from 1977 until 1983. There, he was one of the founding members of the Stadtwerkstatt Linz and of the experimental music project ''Die Post''. Career Olfaction He started to explore olfactory art in the 1980s. One of his early installations was shown at the Ars Electronica Festival in 1986. In 1996 he built the prototype of a mechanically-controlled scent organ, the ''Smeller 1.0''. MIDI (; Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a technical standard that describes a communications protocol, digital interface, and electrical connectors that connect a wide variety of electronic musical instruments, computers, and related audio devices for playing, editing, and recording music. The specification originates in the paper ''Universal Synthesizer Interface'' published by Dave Smith and Chet Wood of Sequential Circuits at the 1981 Audio Engineering Society conference in New York City. A single MIDI cable can carry up to sixteen channels of MIDI data, each of which can be routed to a separate device. Geza Schön
Geza Schön is a German master perfumer born in Kassel and based in Berlin. He trained at Haarmann & Reimer (now Symrise) and has worked with Diesel, Ormonde Jayne, FCUK, biehl parfumkunstwerke, and Boudicca. In 2006, Schön created the brand Escentric Molecules, a perfume brand highlighting single molecules. He received the Outstanding Artist Award for Interdisciplinarity in 2016, then, in 2017, the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent, together with Wolfgang Georgsdorf for "Osmodrama / Smeller 2.0". Crossing Europe
Crossing Europe is an international film festival in Linz, Austria, that takes place every year in April since 2004. It defines itself as a platform for young European film makers. The focus of the film selection lies on sociopolitical and youth cultural topics. Every year, about 180 films from more than 30 European countries are chosen to be shown on this six days long festival. Besides Vienna International Film Festival, Viennale and Diagonale, Crossing Europe is the third biggest film festival of Austria with about 20.000 visitors every year. Festival juries give away awards in several categories to European fictional and documentary films as well as to locally produced films. Polypropylene (PP), also known as polypropene, is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications. It is produced via chain-growth polymerization from the monomer propylene. Edgar Reitz (born 1 November 1932) is a German filmmaker and Professor of Film at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung (State University of Design) in Karlsruhe. He is best-known for his internationally acclaimed '' Heimat film series'' (1984-2013). Early life and education Reitz was born in Morbach, Hunsrück. His father Robert was a watchmaker and his business in Morbach was later taken over by Reitz's brother Guido. Reitz's interest in acting and producing plays began in his school years in Simmern, where he was encouraged by his German teacher Karl Windhäuser. After taking his Abitur, he studied German studies, journalism, art history and theatre studies in Munich from 1952. Omer Fast (born in Jerusalem 1972) is an Israeli video artist. Early life and education Born and raised in Israel, Fast spent much of his teenage years in Jericho, New York while his father pursued a medical degree in both countries.
