Smackover Historic Commercial District
The Smackover Historic Commercial District encompasses the civic and commercial heart of the small town of Smackover, Arkansas. It consists of sixteen buildings lining a single block of Broadway north of 7th Avenue. The area is reflective of Smackover's explosive growth following the discovery of oil in 1925; most of the buildings were built between 1925 and 1940. They are mostly vernacular commercial buildings, one or two stories in height, with flat roofs obscured by a parapet on the main facade. Also included in the district are the Methodist Episcopal church, the old fire station, and the old city hall and jail. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Smackover, Arkansas
Smackover is a small city in northern Union County, Arkansas, Union County, Arkansas, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population was at 1,865. It had a large oil boom in the 1920s, with production continuing for some time. History In 1686, the French settlers called this area ''"Sumac Couvert"'', which translates to "covered in Sumac, sumac bushes". This was transliterated, that is, phonetically Anglicized by the English-speaking settlers of the 19th century and later to the name "Smackover." The name Bayou de Chemin Couvert (Smackover Creek) first appeared in an April 5, 1789, letter written by the commandant of Fort Miro (Monroe, Louisiana) to the French territorial governor. Oil was discovered in this area in 1922; it attracted national attention, speculators, and an economic boom. Smackover was incorporated in 1923. Witt, Seibert & Halsey
Witt, Seibert & Halsey was an American architectural firm based in the twin cities of Texarkana, Arkansas and Texarkana, Texas, with a practice extending into Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. It was founded by architect Sidney Stewart, but achieved prominence under Bayard Witt and Eugene C. Seibert. History Bayard Witt was born in 1880 in Witt's Foundry, Tennessee. He worked as a railroad laborer and foreman before obtaining an apprenticeship in civil engineering. In 1904 he moved to Texarkana, Arkansas, joining the office of architect Sidney Stewart,St. John's Episcopal Church NRHP Nomination (2017) who had been practicing in Texarkana since at least 1900. Parapet
A parapet is a barrier that is an extension of the wall at the edge of a roof, terrace, balcony, walkway or other structure.
