Sluggish Weevil
''Cleonis pigra'', the sluggish weevil or large thistle weevil, is a weevil List of weevil (Curculionoidea) species recorded in Britain#Subfamily Lixinae, species recorded in Britain and native to Eurasia. It was introduced into North America to help control creeping thistle. This species develops in the roots of plants in the family Asteraceae. It appears spelled different ways in the literature: ''Cleonis piger, Cleonus piger, Cleonus pigra'', but the correct spelling under ICZN Article 31.2 is ''Cleonis pigra'' It is identified by double V-pattern elytra and a Rostrum (anatomy), rostrum with three Sulcus (anatomy), sulci. Giovanni Antonio Scopoli (sometimes Latinisation of names, Latinized as Johannes Antonius Scopolius) (3 June 1723 – 8 May 1788) was an Italian physician and natural history, naturalist. His biographer Otto Guglia named him the "first anational European" and the "Carl Linnaeus, Linnaeus of the Austrian Empire". Biography Scopoli was born at Cavalese in the Val di Fiemme, belonging to the Prince-Bishopric of Trent, Bishopric of Trent (today's Trentino), son of Francesco Antonio, military commissioner, and Claudia Caterina Gramola (1699-1791), painter from a patrician family from Trentino.
