''Australian Playhouse'' was an Australian anthology TV series featuring the work of Australian writers. It ran for two series consisting of 40 episodes. Among the featured productions were works by Pat Flower who was the main writer having written 10 episodes, other writers included Tony Morphett, John Warwick, Barbara Vernon, Richard Lane, James Davern and David Sale Background Development In August 1965 Talbot Duckmanton of the ABC announced that the ABC would increase its production of local drama, including a show called ''Australian Playhouse''. Oscar Whitbread
Oscar Ralph Whitbread (26 November 1929 – 16 May 2016) was an English-Australian producer who worked extensively in television. He moved to Australia in the late 1940s. Whitbread started his career at the ABC in 1956, where he served as the Head of Drama, before switching to the same position with the Seven Network. He was responsible for numerous successful series including '' Bellbird'', ''The Flying Doctors'' and the miniseries ''Power Without Glory''. Whitbread was the senior executive producer at Crawford Productions and also worked in England for the BBC, Thames Television, Granada Television and London Weekend Television. During the 1970s, he worked as a lecturer in theatre media studies, at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, New South Wales. Personal life Whitbread was married to Corinne Kerby. Allan Trevor
Allan Trevor (1923 - 1969) was an Australian actor, writer and producer. Early life He worked on the land for nearly six years but changed careers when he realised he would not earn enough money to buy his own farm. He undertook various other jobs, including police cadet, shop assistant and salesman, before he began to study acting in Perth in 1941. Career Trevor moved to Sydney in 1947 and became one of the leading radio actors in the city, appearing in more than 500 radio plays and serials. He won the Macquarie Acting Award for Best Actor. He finally concentrated on writing for television and became the line producer for the majority of Crawford Productions, Crawford's popular 1967 spy series ''Hunter (1967 Australian TV series), Hunter'', in which he also appeared occasionally as an actor. Brian James (actor)
Brian James (5 July 1918 – 2 November 2009) was an Australian radio, stage, television and film actor. Early life, radio and theatre Brian James was born in Melbourne, the son of the Bishop of St. Arnaud and started his career as a teacher at Ivanhoe Grammar School for four years, in 1933 joining the Royal Australian Navy, after which he was demobilised five years later, and decided to pursue a career as an actor, attending Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, making his stage debut in 1947 and he featured in the 1952 J.C. Williamson production of ''Seagulls Over Sorrento''. He would also appear in the 1960 TV production of the play.
