Slovenia men's national water polo team represents Slovenia in international water polo competitions and friendly matches, and is governed by the Federation of Water polo clubs Slovenia. The team participated at the European Water Polo Championship on five occasions. Their highest finish was 11th place in the 1999 edition. Mirko Vičević
Mirko Vičević (30 June 1968) is a Montenegrin retired water polo player. He achieved 1057 goals in his career. He is a member of the World House of Fame. He was part of the Yugoslavia team which won the gold medal in water polo in the 1986 World Championships and 1988 Summer Olympics. European Water Polo Championship
The European Water Polo Championship is a sport competition for national water polo teams, currently held biannually and organized by the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN), the governing European aquatics federation. There are both men's and women's competitions. The first European Water Polo Championship was held in 1926 in Budapest, Hungary, with just a men's competition. The women for the first time competed in 1985 (Oslo, Norway) for the European title. The water polo tournament was part of the European Aquatics Championships up to and including 1997, and from 1999 the event was separated and got its own independent tournament. Water Polo
Water polo is a competitive team sport played in water between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Excluding the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. It is typically played in an all-deep pool where players cannot touch the bottom. A game consists mainly of the players swimming to move about the pool, treading water (mainly using the eggbeater kick), passing the ball, and shooting at the goal. 2022 Men's European Water Polo Championship
The 2022 Men's European Water Polo Championship was the 35th running of the tournament. It was held in the Spaladium Arena in Split, Croatia from 29 August to 10 September 2022. Croatia won their second title by defeating Hungary in the final, meanwhile Spain beat Italy to secure the bronze medal. Venues LEN announced on 28 August 2020 that Split, Croatia would host the 2022 edition of the competition. All games will be played at the Spaladium Arena. Qualification Sixteen teams were able to compete at the main event. 2024 Men's European Water Polo Championship
The 2024 Men's European Water Polo Championship is the upcoming 36th edition of this tournament. It will be held in Dubrovnik and Zagreb, Croatia from 4 to 16 January 2024. Originally, Israel had been selected as host and the competition was slated to be held in Netanya, from 3 to 16 January 2024. Due to security concerns after the breakout of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, LEN announced the Championship would be hosted elsewhere. Host selection The championship was originally going to be held in Tel Aviv, Israel between 7 and 21 October 2023 (although it would still be called the 2024 European Championship).
