Slingshot Hip Hop
''Slingshot Hip Hop'' is a 2008 documentary film directed by Jackie Reem Salloum that traces the history and development of hip hop in the Palestinian territories from the time DAM pioneered the art form in the late 1990s. It braids together the stories of young Palestinian artists living in Gaza, the West Bank, and inside Israel as they discover hip hop, and employ it as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and poverty. Jackie Reem Salloum
Jacqueline Reem Salloum is a Palestinian/Syrian American artist and filmmaker. She received her MFA from New York University. Her work has been featured at Sundance Film Festival. She is the director and editor of the award-winning film, Slingshot Hip Hop, the first feature-length documentary about the Palestinian Hip Hop scene which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Salloum directed and edited Planet of the Arabs, an experimental short on Hollywood’s negative depiction of Arabs and Muslims through the decades. Palestinian Hip Hop
Palestinian hip hop reportedly started in 1998 with Tamer Nafar's group DAM. These Palestinian youth forged the new Palestinian musical subgenre, which blends Arabic melodies and hip hop beats. Lyrics are often sung in Arabic, Hebrew, English, and sometimes French. Since then, the new Palestinian musical subgenre has grown to include artists in Palestine, Israel, Great Britain, the United States and Canada. Borrowing from traditional rap music that first emerged in New York in the 1970s, "young Palestinian musicians have tailored the style to express their own grievances with the social and political climate in which they live and work." Beddawi
Beddawi, Beddaoui, () is a town situated at the Mediterranean Sea about 5 km north of the center of Tripoli, Lebanon. It is part of Tripoli's metro area and a mainly Sunni Muslim Lebanese village. It had 6,012 eligible voters in the 2009 election. There are 4 primary schools and one secondary school and one soccer team. The city is surrounded by orange orchards and has two monumental buildings of the crusades. It has also a non-working petroleum refinery, out of order since the Lebanese civil war. Shatila Refugee Camp
The Shatila refugee camp ( ar, مخيم شاتيلا), also known as the Chatila refugee camp, is a settlement originally set up for Palestinian refugees in 1949. It is located in southern Beirut, Lebanon and houses more than 9,842 registered Palestine refugees. Since the eruption of the Syrian Civil War, the refugee camp has received a large number of Syrian refugees. In 2014, the camp's population was estimated to be between 10,000 and 22,000.
