Slingsby is a village and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. It is about west of Malton, North Yorkshire, Malton on the B1257 road. According to the 2001 Census had a population (including Fryton) of 634, increasing to 665 at the 2011 Census. History The village is mentioned in the ''Domesday Book'' as "Selungesbi" in the "Maneshou hundred". It was part of the Hovingham manor, but some land was owned by ''Orm, son of Gamul'' at the time of the Norman invasion. Afterwards land around the manor were split between ''Hugh, son of Baldric'' and Robert of Mortain, Count Robert of Mortain. The manor passed to the ''Mowbray'' family until 1322, when John de Mowbray, 2nd Baron Mowbray, John de Mowbray was beheaded for rising against the Crown. The ''Wyville'' family held land under the Mowbrays. The ''Hastings'' family held the manor until 1595 when it was purchased by Charles Cavendish (1553–1617), Sir Charles Cavendish (d. 1617). Slingsby Aviation was a British aircraft manufacturer based in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, England. The company was founded to design and build gliders and sailplanes. From the early 1930s to around 1970 it built over 50% of all British club gliders and had success at national and international level competitions. It then produced some powered aircraft, notably the composite built Firefly trainer, before becoming a producer of specialised composite materials and components. The business is now known as Marshall Advanced Composites and produces composite parts for ships, submarines and aircraft. It is a subsidiary of Marshall of Cambridge. History The business was founded in Scarborough by Frederick Nicholas Slingsby, an RAF pilot in World War I. Slingsby Channel
Slingsby Channel is a strait on the north side of Bramham Island in the Queen Charlotte Strait region of the British Columbia Coast, Central Coast of British Columbia. It is one of only two entrances to Seymour Inlet and the associated maze of waterways inland, which lie to the northeast of Bramham. The other entrance is Schooner Channel, formerly Schooner Passage, on the east side of that island. The Fox Islands (British Columbia), Fox Islands, which lie in its entrance, Bramham Island and the channel itself, plus Slingsby Rock and Slingsby Point, are named in association with Bramham Park, the Yorkshire home of George Lane-Fox (MP), George Lane-Fox. Through the Slingsby Channel flows the world's strongest current, the Nakwakto Rapids, that has been measured at speeds up to 18.4 miles per hour.
