The Slave Lake Wolves were a Junior "B" ice hockey team based in Slave Lake, Alberta, Canada. They were members of the North West Junior Hockey League The North West Junior Hockey League is a Junior "B" Ice Hockey league operating in the Peace River region of Alberta and British Columbia, Canada, sanctioned by Hockey Canada. The winner of Northwest "B" playoffs earns the chance to compete for ... (NWJHL) and played their home games at Arctic Ice Centre. The team temporarily ceased operations in 2011 as Slave Lake recovered from the 2011 wildfire, and therefore did not play in the 2011–12 season. The team took a leave of absence due to lack of players prior to the 2014–15 season and have not returned. Slave Lake, Alberta
Slave Lake is a town in northern Alberta, Canada that is surrounded by the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River No. 124. It is approximately northwest of Edmonton. It is located on the southeast shore of Lesser Slave Lake at the junction of Highway 2 and Highway 88. Slave Lake serves as a local centre for the area. The administrative office for the Sawridge First Nation is also located in the town. History The first European known to visit the area of the present-day Town of Slave Lake was the British explorer David Thompson, who arrived in 1799. Following his brief visit, other British agents established several fur trading posts around Slave Lake, including a Hudson's Bay Company post at the mouth of the lake. A settlement developed around the post and became known as Sawridge. It was renamed as Slave Lake in 1923. North West Junior Hockey League
The North West Junior Hockey League is a Junior "B" Ice Hockey league operating in the Peace River region of Alberta and British Columbia, Canada, sanctioned by Hockey Canada. The winner of Northwest "B" playoffs earns the chance to compete for the Western Canadian Junior "B" Crown, the Keystone Cup. To earn the right to compete, they must face off against the winners of the other Alberta "B" leagues in the Russ Barnes Trophy. 2011 Slave Lake Wildfire
A large wildfire burned through Slave Lake, Alberta, Canada and its surrounding area from May 14 to 16, 2011. The conflagration, which originated outside of town as a forest fire, was quickly pushed past fire barriers designed to protect the town by winds. The fire forced the complete evacuation of Slave Lake's 7,000 residents—considered the largest such displacement in the province's history at the time—to the nearby towns of Athabasca and Westlock, as well as the provincial capital of Edmonton. No casualties were reported amongst the town's population, but a pilot was killed when his helicopter crashed while he was battling the fires around the community. The fire destroyed roughly one-third of Slave Lake; 374 properties were destroyed and 52 damaged in the town, and another 59 were destroyed and 32 damaged in the surrounding Municipal District of Lesser Slave River No. 124, leaving 732 residents homeless. Whitecourt Wolverines (2008–2012)
The Whitecourt Wolverines were a junior "B" ice hockey team based in Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada. They were members of the North West Junior Hockey League (NWJHL) and played their home games out of the Scott Safety Centre. History Founded in August 2007, the Wolverines played their inaugural season in 2007–08, appearing in the league finals, losing in the seventh game to the Peace River Navigators. The Wolverines have appeared in the NWJHL finals in each of its five seasons. Its four consecutive championships from 2008–09 to 2011–12 is a league record for consecutive championships by a team. The team also holds the league record for most championships by a team.
