Slava-class Cruiser
The ''Slava'' class, Soviet designation Project 1164 ''Atlant'' (russian: Атлант, Atlant, Atlas), is a class of guided-missile cruisers designed and constructed in the Soviet Union for the Soviet Navy, and currently operated by the Russian Navy. Design and history The design started in the late 1960s, based around use of the P-500 Bazalt missile. The cruiser was intended as a less expensive conventionally powered alternative to the nuclear-powered s. All are now armed with P-1000 Vulkan AShM missiles, developed in the late 1970s to late 1980s. There was a long delay in this programme, while the problems with the Bazalt were resolved. These ships acted as flagships for numerous task forces. All ships were built at the 61 Kommunar yard in Mykolaiv (Nikolaev), Ukrainian SSR. Blonde Vinyl was an independent record label founded in 1990 by Michael Knott. The ''Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music'' describes the label as "one of Christian music's first true indie labels." Background Blonde Vinyl signed bands with styles that were viable in the underground of the general market but rarely found their way into the Christian market—old school punk, garage rock, grunge, gothic, EBM/industrial, synthpop/house, spoken word, acoustic pop. Blonde Vinyl folded in 1993 when its distributor, Spectra, went bankrupt. After bankruptcy, Knott attempted to resurrect Blonde Vinyl under the name Siren Records. Slava (russian: Cлава, meaning "Glory") watches were classic "civil" Russian watches. The Slava factory (known originally as the Second Moscow Watch Factory) was the second non-military watchmaker established in the Soviet Union, in 1924. The watches of this brand have always been intended for civilian consumption, without military or aerospace pretensions. In January 2006, the Slava factory and its site were sold for retail development. By 2010 the factory had been demolished for new real estate projects. The brand has been taken over by the municipality of Moscow in a debt swap. Slava Ice Shelf
Slava Ice Shelf (), is an ice shelf along the coast of Antarctica between Mawson Peninsula and Cape Andreyev. The feature was photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy (USN) Operation Highjump in 1947. The area was photographed in 1958 by the Soviet Antarctic Expedition (SovAE) which applied the name "Zaliv Slava" to the wide open bay that fronts this ice shelf. This name decision is in accord with the recommendation by ANCA that the name would be appropriately applied to the ice shelf. Named after the Soviet whaling flotilla Slava. ''Slava! A Political Overture for Orchestra'' is a short orchestral composition by Leonard Bernstein. It was written for the inaugural concerts of Mstislav Rostropovich's first season with the National Symphony Orchestra in 1977. It premiered on October 11, 1977, with Rostropovich conducting. Premiere and influences Rostropovich was known as Slava (from Mstislav) to his friends, thus the unusual name (and it is also Russian for "glory"). His dog "Pooks" is honored in the piece. The name is shouted before the 7/8 section, at the spot where the woodblock solo is heard. Although this was not written in the score, it is common for a conductor to perform the piece with it. Critics generally responded well to the Overture.
