Sir Stephen Slaney (1524 - 1608) was an English merchant, four times Master of the Worshipful Company of Skinners, and Alderman, Sheriff and Lord Mayor of London. He has been called "one of the most picturesque of the Elizabethan Merchant Adventurers". Career Stephen Slaney was the son of John Slaney of Mitton (in Penkridge, in Staffordshire)G. Robert Aglionby Slaney
Robert Aglionby Slaney (9 June 1791 – 19 May 1862) was a British barrister and Whig politician from Shropshire. He sat in the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament for the borough of Shrewsbury for most of the period from 1826 until his death in 1862. Early life Slaney was the eldest son of Robert Slaney (1764–1834) of Hatton Grange, Shropshire, and his wife, Mary, daughter of Thomas Mason of Shrewsbury. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and was called to the bar in 1817 at Lincoln's Inn. Career He was first elected at the 1826 general election, and was re-elected at the next three general elections, until his defeat at the 1835 general election by the Conservative Party candidate John Cressett-Pelham. Ivor Slaney
Ivor Ernst Slaney (born 27 May 1921 in West Bromwich, United Kingdom, d. 20 March 1998, Southampton, United Kingdom) was a prolific musical composer and conductor, notable for his work in film, television and radio. Slaney was educated at the Royal College of Music, and married Mary D Ludlow pianist Dolores Ventura in 1948. He divorced in 1969 and remarried in 1974. His father, Ernst Wallace Slaney, was the principal 'cellist in the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra in the 1920s and 1930s under Sir Dan Godfrey. As a youngster Ivor joined the choir of St Stephen's Church, Bournemouth where he was also taught by Percy Whitlock, the church's Director of Music and a colleague of Ernst Slaney at the Bournemouth Pavilion. Mary Decker
Mary Teresa Slaney (formerly Tabb, née Decker, born August 4, 1958) is a retired American middle-distance runner. During her career, she won gold medals in the 1500 meters and 3000 meters at the 1983 World Championships, and was the world record holder in the mile, 5000 meters and 10,000 meters. In total, she set 17 official and unofficial world records, including being the first woman in history to break 4:20 for the mile. She also set 36 US national records at distances ranging from 800 meters to 10,000 meters, and has held the US record in the mile, 2000 meters and 3000 meters since the early 1980s, while her 1500 meters record stood for 32 years. Thomas Slaney
Thomas Charles "Tom" Slaney (1852 – 1935) was an English footballer and manager who was the first manager of Stoke. Career Slaney was born in Stoke-upon-Trent and attended Stoke St Peter's School where John William Thomas was a teacher. Thomas was the first honorary secretary of the Stoke Ramblers and was well known in the local area for his involvement in football, cricket and athletic clubs, therefore Slaney took a keen interest in local sport. He attended the Saltley College in Birmingham and went to St John's school in Hanley as a teacher, rising to headmaster within ten years. He began playing football with Stoke and was soon elected club captain. John Slaney
John G. Slaney (born February 7, 1972) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He is an assistant coach for the Tucson Roadrunners. He was formerly the assistant coach of the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League (AHL). Playing career He was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the first round, 9th overall in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. In the final game of the 1991 IIHF Junior World Championships, Slaney scored a tie-breaking third period goal for Canada versus the USSR, giving Canada the win in the game and the tournament. The goal made him one of the most prominent names among Newfoundland sportspeople. Richard Charles Slaney (born 16 May 1956) is a male British discus thrower who competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics and strongman competitor, notable for being a repeat winner of the Britain's Strongest Man title. At the UK Athletics Championships he won in 1979, ranked second in 1977 to 1978, and was third in 1980. He also came third in the shot put in 1980. Biography Slaney was born in Redhill, Surrey. As a sportsman he was foremost a field athlete specialising in the discus. Major Philip Percy Kenyon-Slaney (12 February 1896 – 9 September 1928) was a British Conservative Party politician. Malcolm Slaney is an American electrical engineer, whose research has focused on machine perception and multimedia analysis. He is a Fellow of the IEEE for "contributions to perceptual signal processing and tomographic imaging". He is a consulting professor at the Stanford University Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics and an affiliate faculty member in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Washington.
