Slana River
The Slana River, also known as Slahna, Slakna, or Sla River, is a tributary of the Copper River in southern Alaska in the United States. It begins near Mount Kimball in the Alaska Range and flows generally south to meet the larger river near Slana. Its Native American name was first recorded in 1885 by Henry Tureman Allen. Tributaries of the Slana River include the Athell Creek, Rufus Creek, Porcupine Creek, Natat Creek, Suslota Creek, Carlson Creek, Suslotina Creek, Slana Slough, Mabel Creek, Granite Creek, Jack Creek, and Alteration Creek. The first miles of the river are through a narrow valley, but nearer to the mouth it becomes wider and meanders a lot. Between Slana River and Little Tok River lies Mentasta Lake and the Mentasta Pass. Other passes near the Slana are Gillett Pass towards the Dry Tok River, and Sikonsina Pass, towards Burnt Lake and the Big Tok River. Mentasta Lake (''Mendaesde'' in Ahtna Athabascan) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Copper River Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 112, down from 142 in 2000. Geography Mentasta Lake is located at (62.923924, -143.533240). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which, of it is land and of it (0.66%) is water. Demographics Mentasta Lake first reported on the 1940 U.S. Census as "Montasta Lake", an unincorporated native village. It did not report in 1950. It next appeared in 1960 as "Mentasta." In 1970, it returned as Mentasta Lake. In 1980 it was made a census-designated place (CDP). As of the census of 2000, there were 142 people, 54 households, and 32 families residing in the CDP.
