Skálmöld
Skálmöld () is a Viking / folk metal band from Reykjavík, Iceland, formed in August 2009. The band's name is literally translated as ''Age of Swords'' and also means "lawlessness", referring to the Age of the Sturlungs of Icelandic history, when a civil war broke out between the country's family clans. History Snæbjörn Ragnarsson and Björgvin Sigurðsson, who have been friends since childhood and have played together in various collectives, including death metal and punk bands, decided to start a new metal band, Skálmöld, formed in August 2009 in Reykjavík. The other band members had also been active in the Icelandic music scene. Initially, the band was intended to be merely a hobby, but the members soon decided to record an album before they were "too old and tired". ''Skálmöld & Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands'' is a live album and concert video by the Icelandic heavy metal band Skálmöld and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, released on 18 December 2013. The song material is from Skálmöld's first two albums, arranged for orchestra by Haraldur V. Sveinbjörnsson and performed during three concerts at Harpa in Reykjavík. The concerts received the Icelandic Music Award for Music Event of the Year. The album was nominated for Album of the Year – Rock and sold more than 7,000 copies. Background and recording The band Skálmöld formed in Reykjavík, Iceland, in 2009 and combine heavy metal music inspired by bands such as early Metallica, Iron Maiden, Anthrax and Slayer with conventions from Icelandic music and poetry traditions. ''Baldur'' is the début full-length album by the Icelandic Viking / folk metal band Skálmöld. It was first released in Iceland and the Faeroe Islands on December 15, 2010 through Tutl and re-released by Napalm Records worldwide in July – August 2011. Background While Skálmöld was initially formed with intention to be just a hobby, the band members soon decided to record an album. In January 2010, the band recorded its first demo, consisting of two song, "Árás" and "Kvaðning", but it was never released. In May 2010, Skálmöld entered Studio Reflex in Reykjavík to record its first album. Music ''Baldur'' is a concept album, telling a story of a fictional eponymous Viking with lyrics inspired by the Icelandic sagas and Norse mythology, entirely in Icelandic. Sorgir
''Sorgir'' (''"Sorrows"'' or ''"Griefs"'' in Icelandic) is the fifth full-length album by the Icelandic viking/folk metal band Skálmöld, released on 12 October 2018 via Napalm Records. Concept and recording The album is divided into two parts. The first four tracks are labeled ''Sagnir'' (''Tales'') and each tell a tragic story. Track number five to eight are labeled ''Svipir'' (''Ghosts'') and tell the same stories, but from the perspective of the ghosts who caused the disastrous events. The names of the ''Svipir'' tracks are taken from the names of mythological beings. ''Sorgir'' was made two years after Skálmöld's previous album '' Vögguvísur Yggdrasils''. The band described the creation process as quick and raw. The album was produced by Einar Vilberg and recorded at the studio Hljóðverk in Reykjavík. Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands (Iceland Symphony Orchestra) (ISO) is an Icelandic orchestra based in Reykjavík, Iceland. Its primary concert venue is the Harpa Concert Hall. The Iceland Symphony is an autonomous public institution under the auspices of the Icelandic Ministry of Education. Iceland Symphony Orchestra made its home in Háskólabíó (University Cinema) from 1961 to 2011, but moved into the new 1800-seat Harpa Concert Hall in spring 2011. The orchestra gives approximately sixty concerts each season. Joel McIver
Joel McIver (born 10 February 1971) is a British author. His best-known work is ''Justice for All: The Truth About Metallica'', first published in 2004 and appearing in nine languages since then. McIver's other works include biographies of Black Sabbath, Slayer, Thunder, Ice Cube, and Queens of the Stone Age.
