Skyman (Columbia Comics)
The Skyman is a fictional comic book superhero that appeared stories during the Golden Age of Comic Books. Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Ogden Whitney, the character first appeared in the Columbia Comics omnibus title ''Big Shot Comics'' #1 (May 1940). He is unrelated to the DC Comics character. The Skyman was Allan Turner, who was raised by his uncle to become "outstanding in mind and body". A brilliant scientist, he had no superpowers but did have a flying wing-shaped airplane, dubbed ''the Wing'', that flew by the power of Earth's magnetic poles. With this and money inherited from his late uncle's will, he fought crime. In 1944, he acquired an "Icarus-Cape", a huge pair of wings which allowed him to fly without an airplane. ''Skyman'' is a 2019 American science fiction- found footage horror film written and directed by Daniel Myrick. Inspired by memories from his childhood and interest in supernatural events, Myrick wrote the premise to be a "character study" comparable to the real-world psychological trauma and life-long experiences of alien abductees. In interviews leading up to the film's release Myrick stated, "This isn't Dan trying to do another found footage horror film. This is its own thing." Sand Demon Sand Demon is the name of a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Eddie Slick is the manager of the wrestler King Crusher, and provided him with mutative steroids to win a match. However, Firestorm eventually defeated him while exposing the steroid operation in the process. Eddie was later exposed to the same drugs as his wrestler and buried in the Nevada Desert for exposing the drug ring behind the steroids leaving the gangsters broke. Developing the power to control sand, he sought revenge and crossed paths with Firestorm. Firestorm thought that Sand Demon was Martin Stein, who had become too crazy to reason with. Sylvester Pemberton, alternately known as The Star-Spangled Kid and Skyman, is a superhero in the DC Comics universe. Sylvester first appeared in ''Star Spangled Comics'' #1 (October 1941) and was created by Jerry Siegel and Hal Sherman. Starting October 1941, the character headlined his own comic, ''Star Spangled Comics'', which introduced his sidekick, Stripesy. Fall 1941 was a boom period for patriotic superheroes as the country prepared to enter World War II; during this period, comic book publishers also launched Miss Victory, Miss America, U.S. Jones, the Fighting Yank, the Flag, Captain Flag and Yank and Doodle, among others. Mark Radcliffe (born 29 June 1958) is an English radio broadcaster, musician and writer. He is best known for his broadcasting work for the BBC, for which he has worked in various roles since the 1980s. Radcliffe began his broadcasting career in local commercial radio in Manchester before a move to the national station BBC Radio 5, where he met and formed a partnership with Marc Riley, a former guitarist with the Fall. Yaroslav Horak (12 June 1927 – 24 November 2020) was an Australian illustrator and comics artist, of ethnic Czech-Russian origin, best known for his work on the newspaper comic strip ''James Bond (comic strip), James Bond''. Biography Horak was born on 12 June 1927 in Harbin, China, the son of a Czech father and Russian mother. In 1939 his family migrated to Sydney, Australia prior to World War II. He began his career as a portrait painter but switched to illustration for the larger Australian magazine publishers. Philip Orin Parmelee (March 8, 1887 – June 1, 1912) was an American aviation pioneer trained by the Wright brothers and credited with several early world aviation records and "firsts" in flight. He turned a keen interest in small engines into employment with the Wright Company in its early years and was one of several young pilots hired by the Wright brothers to demonstrate and publicize the capabilities of their airplanes. Because of his youth, blond good looks, and daring reputation, Parmelee had the nickname "Skyman" attributed to him. Guillaume Faye (; 7 November 1949 – 6 March 2019) was a French journalist, writer, and leading member of the French New Right. Earlier in his career, anti-Zionism permeated his work; later on, criticism of Islam became prominent in his writings. The Rain City Superhero Movement was a Seattle-based organization active in the U.S. state of Washington between 2011 and 2014. It was composed of costumed activists who describe themselves as a crime-fighting brigade. Witnesses have reported that the group has intervened in crimes on several occasions, while the police maintained they would prefer that individuals other than sworn officers not place themselves in danger, and act as good witnesses instead. Garrett Brown (born April 6, 1942) is an American inventor, best known as the creator of the Steadicam. Brown's invention allows camera operators to film while walking without the normal shaking and jostles of a handheld camera. The Steadicam was first used in the Hal Ashby film ''Bound for Glory (1976 film), Bound for Glory'' (1976), receiving an Academy Award (Academy Award for Best Cinematography, Best Cinematography), and since used on such films as ''Rocky'', filming Rocky's running and training sequences, and ''Return of the Jedi'', where Brown walked through a Redwood forest with the Steadicam shooting film at 1 frame per second to achieve the illusion of high speed motion during the speeder-bike chase.
