Skunkhour
Skunkhour are an Australian funk rock band that were formed in Sydney in 1991. They released four studio albums, ''Skunkhour'' (July 1993), ''Feed'' (April 1995), ''Chin Chin (album), Chin Chin'' (July 1997) and ''The Go (Skunkhour album), The Go'' (May 2001) before disbanding in November 2001. ''Feed'' peaked at No. 21 on the ARIA Charts, ARIA Albums Chart while ''Chin Chin'' reached No. 34. Four of the group's songs, "Up to Our Necks in It" (Triple J Hottest 100, 1995, 1995), "Weightlessness" (Triple J Hottest 100, 1997, 1997), "Home" (Triple J Hottest 100, 1999, 1999), and "Kick in the Door" (Triple J Hottest 100, 2000, 2000) were listed in the annual Triple J Hottest 100. The group has reformed periodically since 2009 for occasional concerts and festival appearances. ''Chin Chin'' is the third album by Australian band Skunkhour. It was released in 1997 and peaked at No.34 on the Australian album charts in August. The album was the second on the Sony/Epic label and was produced by Magoo, whose credits included Regurgitator and Powderfinger. Three singles were taken from the album—"Breathing Through My Eyes" (May 1997), "Weightlessness" (August) and "Morning Rolls" (November). The album was the band's first after the departure of founding vocalist/rapper Del Larkin, who quit to pursue a career in Walt Disney Animation Studios. ''The Go'' is the fourth and final studio album by Australian band Skunkhour. It was released in 2001. "Home" was released as a single in 1999 and two further singles were taken from the album—"Gold Radiation" (April 2001) and "Kick in the Door". Singer Aya Larkin said the band, which had been forced to abandon a European touring schedule after being dropped by Sony Music in 1998, had been overtaken by a sense of despondency and found it hard to write. "'' Chin Chin'' didn't go as well as we hoped it would and we felt the band's future had been discounted. It brought about a period where we questioned if we wanted to write together any more. The 2000 Triple J Hottest 100, announced in January 2001, was the eighth such countdown of the most popular songs of the year, according to listeners of the Australian radio station Triple J. As in previous years, a CD featuring 37 (not necessarily the top 37) songs was released. The CD featured Queens of the Stone Age's song " Feel Good Hit of the Summer" despite it not making the top 100, hinting that it may have placed at No. 101. Full list 40 of the 100 songs were by Australian artists (marked with a green background). Trivia Scoring songs at #1 and #3, Powderfinger set the current record for best performing pair of songs (ranked by adding their positions). This record was to be equaled by Kings of Leon in 2008. Funk
Funk is a music genre that originated in African Americans, African American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African Americans in the mid-20th century. It de-emphasizes melody and chord progressions and focuses on a strong rhythmic groove (music), groove of a bassline played by an electric bassist and a drum part played by a drum kit, percussionist, often at slower tempos than other popular music. Funk typically consists of a complex percussive groove with Rhythm section, rhythm instruments playing interlocking grooves that create a "hypnotic" and "danceable" feel. Acid Jazz Records is a record label based in East London formed by Gilles Peterson and Eddie Piller in 1987. The label is the namesake of the acid-jazz subgenre of jazz music for which it is most famously known for producing. Background The label's first signing was singer-songwriter Rob Gallagher's band, Galliano, which released the label's first single "Frederick Lies Still" in 1987, which features a sample of "Freddie's Dead" by Curtis Mayfield. The label was known in its early days for putting on club nights at Camden's Dingwalls featuring artists such as The Night Trains and A Man Called Adam. George Allen & Unwin was a British publishing company formed in 1911 when Sir Stanley Unwin purchased a controlling interest in George Allen & Co. St Leonards is a suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. St Leonards is located north-west of the Sydney central business district and lies across the local government areas of Municipality of Lane Cove, North Sydney Council and the City of Willoughby. Galliano (band)
Galliano were a London-based acid jazz group that was active between 1988 and 1997. The group was the first signing to Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson's Acid Jazz record label. The original members were Rob Gallagher ( vocals - credited as Roberto Galliano), Constantine Weir (vocals), Michael Snaith (The Vibe Controller) and Crispin Robinson ( percussion). Other important members included Valerie Etienne, who participated in the recording of all their albums, along with other musicians such as Mick Talbot on keyboards, Crispin Taylor on drums, Ernie McKone on bass guitar, Mark Vandergucht guitar, and Steve Ameedee, otherwise known as Uncle Big Man (dancer).
