Skin Turns To Glass
''Skin Turns to Glass'' is the second full-length album by drone doom band Nadja. It was released on October 27, 2003, by NOTHingness Records and was limited to 120 copies. The album was made when Nadja was still a solo effort of Aidan Baker's, prior to Leah Buckareff joining in 2005. The album was re-issued by The End Records on April 1, 2008, with the entire album remastered and extended (with the exception of "Slow Loss"). Also, this edition of the album contains an untitled 28 minute ambient bonus track played after "Slow Loss." Critical reception ''The Quietus'' wrote: "The attention to detail is never anything less than immaculate. The sensuous drag of ‘Skin Turns To Glass’ features squalls of multi-tracked guitar lines producing birdsong as a veritable Glen Branca of a guitar orchestra provides the snail-slow rumble." Nadja (band)
Nadja is a Canadian duo of Aidan Baker (guitars, vocals, piano, woodwinds, drums) and Leah Buckareff (bass, vocals). Nadja began in 2003 as a solo project for Baker to explore the heavier and noisier side of his experimental ambient music performed mainly on the electric guitar. In 2005 Buckareff joined in order to make the project more than just a studio endeavour and to allow Nadja to perform live. The band's name comes from Aidan's name spelled backwards in order to match the concept of a musical style different from his own work. The J replacing the I is, according to Aidan, a reference to the Nadja character from André Breton's book of the same name and Elina Löwensohn's character from the 1994 vampire movie. Drone metal or drone doom is a style of heavy metal that melds the slow tempos and heaviness of doom metal with the long-duration tones of drone music. Drone metal is sometimes associated with post-metal or experimental metal. Touched is the debut full-length album by drone doom band Nadja, it was first released in May 2003 by Deserted Factory Records. This album was made when Nadja was still a solo effort of Aidan Baker, prior to when Leah Buckareff joined Nadja in 2005. The album was re-issued by Alien8 recordings on March 13, 2007, with extended songs (except in the case of 'Stays Demons'), and remastered with an untitled bonus track at the end of "Flowers of Flesh". The digital edition released via Bandcamp, however, considers the untitled track as part of 'Flowers of Flesh'. Aidan Baker (born 1974/75) is a musician from Toronto, Ontario, Canada who has released numerous records both as a solo artist and as part of various side projects, including Nadja, ARC, Caudal and Mnemosyne.
