Sjoerd De Roos
Sjoerd Hendrik de Roos (14 September 1877 – 3 April 1962), better known as S. H. de Roos, was a Dutch type designer, book cover designer and artist. Life and work De Roos was born in Drachten to a cobbler, but moved to Amsterdam at an early age. It was here that, between the ages of twelve and fourteen, he trained to be a lithography, lithographer. Drachten
Drachten (, ) is a town in the northern Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Smallingerland, Friesland. It had a population of around 56.098 in 2023 and is the Friesland#Urban areas, second largest town in the province of Friesland. History Beginnings Drachten began as a small community on the east side of the Drait (or Dracht) river. There, early settlers started draining the land to use it for agriculture. As the process of draining progressed, residents began to move further eastward in order to use the drained land—former bog, peatbogs—for agriculture. Around 1200 A.D., a small stone church was built. It was used for 200 years afterward, until rising waters drove people even further east. By 1550 the Dutch peat reserve had been exhausted. Nobel (typeface)
Nobel is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Sjoerd Henrik de Roos (1877–1962) and Dick Dooijes (1909–1998) in the period 1929–1935 for the Amsterdam Type foundry). Capitalizing upon Lettergieterij Amsterdam's substantial financial interest in the Berlin typefoundry H. Berthold AG, de Roos decided as a Dutch competitor to Futura to license the Berthold foundry's geometric Berthold Grotesk, change some characters and sell it in the Netherlands under this name. The resulting face became very popular in Dutch printing. Andrea Fuchs and Fred Smeijers produced a revival for the Dutch Type Library (DTL) in 1993, using the archives of Lettergieterij Amsterdam. In the same year in the United States, Tobias Frere-Jones, then at Font Bureau, began a revival of the Nobel face. Cyrus Highsmith and Dyana Weissman later added the light weights. Luc Devroye
Luc P. Devroye is a Belgian computer scientist and mathematician and a James McGill Professor in the School of Computer Science of McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Devroye wrote around 300 mathematical articles, mostly on probabilistic analysis of algorithms, on the asymptotic analysis of combinatorial structures (like trees and graphs), and on random number generation (more precisely, on efficient simulation of different probability distributions). He also contributed to typography (creating several fonts).
