Sixto González
Sixto A. González Edick (born 1965) was the Director of the Arecibo Observatory from September 29, 2003, to September 15, 2006. Arecibo Observatory was an astronomical observatory located in Puerto Rico. At the time of González's directorship Arecibo was the world's largest single dish radio telescope. González was the first Puerto Rican in the position of Director of the observatory. Early years González was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. In 1983, he traveled to Massachusetts. González returned to the island in 1985 and enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao to study Applied Physics and Electronics, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in 1988. He was accepted at MIT. González completed his Ph.D. in 1994 at Utah State University. Cornell Chronicle
The ''Cornell Chronicle'' is the in-house weekly newspaper published by Cornell University. History Prior to the founding of the ''Chronicle'' in 1969, campus news was reported by the ''Cornell Era'' and then by ''The Cornell Daily Sun''. During the Willard Straight Hall takeover in April 1969, the campus learned of unfolding events through the student-edited ''Sun'', the student radio station WVBR, and the independently owned ''Cornell Alumni News.'' However, Cornell's administration, most notably then-Vice President for Public Affairs Steven Muller, was dissatisfied because those media reported events in a manner that was somewhat critical of the administration. German Immigration To Puerto Rico
German immigration to Puerto Rico began in the early part of the 19th century and continued to increase when German businessmen immigrated and established themselves with their families on the island. However, it was the economic and political situation in Europe during the early 19th century plus the fact that the Spanish Crown re-issued the Royal Decree of Graces (Real Cédula de Gracias) which now allowed Europeans who were not of Spanish origin to immigrate to the island that contributed the most to the immigration of hundreds of German families to Puerto Rico in search of a better life. Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain to the United States under the terms of the 1898 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Spanish–American War, and the U.S. established military bases there. Puerto Rican Scientists And Inventors
Before Christopher Columbus and the Spanish Conquistadors landed on the island of "Borikén" (Puerto Rico), the Tainos who inhabited the island depended on their astronomical observations for the cultivation of their crops. In 1581, Juan Ponce de León II, the grandson of the Conquistador Juan Ponce de León, studied an eclipse and its effects on the island and was able to establish the exact geographical coordinates of San Juan with his observations. During the 19th century the economies of many countries in the world suffered from the spread of crop failures. Puerto Rico, whose economy depended heavily on its agriculture, felt the effects of some of the crop diseases. Scientists such as Agustín Stahl, Fermín Tangüis and Fernando López Tuero conducted investigations and experiments in the fields of agriculture, botany, ethnology and zoology.
