Siui Jeonseo
''Siuijeonseo'' () is a Korean cookbook compiled in the late 19th century. The author is unknown but is assumed to be a lady of the yangban (nobility during the Joseon dynasty) class in Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province. In 1919, as Sim Hwanjin was appointed as the governor of Sangju, he was acquainted with a yangban family there. After borrowing a cookbook from the family, Sim transcribed its entire contents and then gave the newly bound book to his wife's daughter, Hong Jeong, who has kept the book since that time. ''Siuijeonseo'' encompasses Korean cuisine in general and categorizes various foods by cooking method. The book mentions 17 different ways of making traditional alcoholic beverages, diverse dried preserved foods, and vegetables, so it is considered a valuable document for researching Korean cuisine. Heo Gyun
Heo Gyun (Hangul: ; Hanja: , 10 December 1569 – 12 October 1618) was a Korean novelist, poet, and politician during the Joseon period. He was also known by his pennames, Gyosan (교산 蛟山) and Seongso (성소 惺所). Life Heo Gyun was born into the Yangcheon Heo clan in the city of Gangneung to Heo Yeop and his second wife, Lady Kim of the Gangneung Kim clan. Heo Gyun's sister Heo Nanseolheon was a poet. Heo's family was of the noble (''yangban'') class (his father had been mayor of Gangneung) and as such Heo Gyun was afforded a solid education and in 1594 passed the nation's highest civil service exam. Under the strong influence of his tutor, Yi Dal 李達, Heo Gyun became a progressive and liberal thinker who dreamed of establishing a more progressive society by eliminating Confucian elements in the social, literary, and political realms. Joseon Dynasty Works
Joseon (; ; Middle Korean: 됴ᇢ〯션〮 Dyǒw syéon or 됴ᇢ〯션〯 Dyǒw syěon), officially the Great Joseon (; ), was the last dynastic kingdom of Korea, lasting just over 500 years. It was founded by Yi Seong-gye in July 1392 and replaced by the Korean Empire in October 1897. ''Sikhye'' (식혜, also spelled ''shikhye'' or ''shikeh''; also occasionally termed ''dansul'' or ''gamju'') is a traditional sweet Korean rice beverage, usually served as a dessert. In addition to its liquid ingredients, S''ikhye'' contains grains of cooked rice and in some cases pine nuts. It is similar to the Chinese ''jiuniang'' and Japanese ''amazake''. The ''Eumsik dimibang'' or ''Gyugon siuibang'' is a Korean cookbook written around 1670 by Lady Jang (張氏, 1598~1680) from Andong Clan, Gyeongsang Province during the Joseon Dynasty. ''Domundaejak'' (hangul: 도문대작; hanja: 屠門大嚼) is a book of food criticism written by Heo Gyun in 1611. It is included in the '' Seongseobubugo'' (hangul: 성서부부고; hanja: 惺所覆覆藁) (a collection of 26 books and 12 volumes). This book was written during Heo Gyun's exile. He was exiled to Hamyel (now Iksan), a seaside district in Jeollabuk-do. While eating the coarse food there, he started to describe the delicious food that he ate before.
