Sitia Nature Park
Sitia Natural or Nature Park ( Greek ''Φυσικό Πάρκο Σητείας'') is a UNESCO Global geopark located in the east of the island of Crete, in southern Greece. The park is nearly coterminous with the municipality of Sitia. The park, however, is not quite as large. Although the coasts are nearly the same, the overland border of the park does not extend as far to the southwest as the border of the municipality, though roughly parallel to it. The municipality contains the park, except that the naval base at the tip of Cape Sideros and the small islands are excluded. In essence, the park is mountainous, containing the Sitia Mountains and its gorges, as well as the Coastal Hill Range, East Crete. However, much of the Thripti Mountains of the southwest have been inadvertently excluded. Karydi, Itanos
Karydi () or Karidi, officially Καρύδιον (Σητείας), is a village in the highlands of east Crete, Greece, part of the municipal unit Itanos. Under the Kallikratis Programme of 2011 it was made a local community (topiki koinoteta). Its chain of civic jurisdiction is as follows: municipal unit (demotike enoteta) Itanos, municipality (demos) Sitia, regional unit (periphereiakes enotetas) Lasithi, region (periphereia) Crete. Until 2017 Karydi shared Itanos with Palaikastro, Zakros, and Mitato (Μητάτο). With the diminishment of Mitato village to no permanent residents the government abolished it in Presidential Decree No. 70/207 and turned over its settlements to Palaikastro. Coastal Hill Range, East Crete
The Coastal Hill Range, East Crete is a mountain range in Lasithi in eastern Crete, Greece. It trends to the northeast from Xerokampos in the southwest in the direction of Cape Sidero. The range, however is drowned on the eastern slopes by the Kasos Strait, a deepwater channel between the island of Kasos and the island of Crete. Its peaks thus become headlands, islands, or near-surface elevations, while the cols between them are typically beaches. UNESCO Global Geoparks
UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp) are geoparks certified by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council as meeting all the requirements for belonging to the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). The GGN is both a network of geoparks and the agency of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). that administers the network. The agency was founded in 2004 in partnership with the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The network was set up to conserve earth's geological heritage, as well as to promote the sustainable research and development by the concerned communities. To implement these goals they adopted the concept of geopark, a term that had already been in use for one of the proposed parks. European Geoparks Network
The European Geoparks Network (EGN) functions as the regional organization of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) and the UNESCO International Geosciences and Geoparks Programme (UNESCO-IGGP). Its main objective is to ensure cooperation between geoparks for the protection of geological heritage and the promotion of sustainable development of their territories in Europe. In 2020 January, the EGN had 75 institutional members (UNESCO Global Geoparks) from 26 European countries and there are several aspiring geopark projects, applying for a UNESCO label and therefore the permanent EGN membership. Thripti
Thrypti ( el, Θρυπτή) is a mountain range in Lasithi in eastern Crete, Greece. It trends to the northeast from Ierapetra in the southwest in the direction of Sitia. However, it only goes half-way in that direction. The rest of the distance is completed by the distinct Ornon mountains, separated from the Thrypti by the Bebonas river valley, and the lower Western Siteia Foothills covering the space between the Ornon range and Sitia itself. The highest peak of Thrypti is ''Afentis'', which is 1,476 m amsl. The three ranges constitute the West Sitia Mountains. Geography The Thrypti mountains are virtually 100% under the municipality of Ierapetra in Lasithi regional unit. The NE border of Ierapetra is so irregular that some small pockets of Thrypti might inadvertently be in neighboring Siteia municipality. Sitia Mountains
The Sitia or Siteia Mountains, also known as the Sitiaka Range, are a group of four mountain ranges extending SW-NE in Lasithi in eastern Crete, Greece. Stretching from the southern coast to the plain of the city of Sitia on the northern coast, they tend to isolate east Crete from the rest of Crete, creating a refugium for the rare plant and animal species and a refuge for the ancient people practising the Minoan culture. In this ancient refuge are now to be found the ruins of Minoan sites at Mochlos, Kato Zakro, Palaikastro, and Kavousi. These are four of the major sites of East Crete, but the number of sites recorded or excavated is in the hundreds. Zakros Mountains, Crete
The Zakros Mountains are a mountain range in Lasithi in eastern Crete, Greece. It trends to the northeast from Diaskari Beach in the southwest in the direction of Toplou Monastery near Cape Sidero. This range are considered to be the east side of the Sitia mountains (Σητειακά βουνά), divided from the west side by the Rema Pentelis ("Pentelis river"), a stream with its valley that flows S-N across most of Crete at that point, entering the Bay of Sitia just east of Sitia. Cape Sideros
Cape Sideros or Cape Sidero ( el, Άκρα Σίδερος, Akra Sideros) is a cape at the eastern end of the island of Crete, Greece. Anciently it was known as Samonium or Samonion ( grc, Σαμώνιον), Sammonium or Sammonion ( grc, Σαμμώνιον), Salmonium or Salmonion (Σαλμώνιον) and Salmone (Σαλμώνη). The cape shares the name Sideros or Sidero with the island-like peninsula of which it is a projection, but which had the name first remains unknown, as does the provenance of either name. Cape Sidero is often not confined to the peninsula Sideros, but might refer to the entire northeast promontory. Geopark
A geopark is a protected area with internationally significant geology within which sustainable development is sought and which includes tourism, conservation, education and research concerning not just geology but other relevant sciences. In 2005, a European Geopark was defined as being: "a territory with a particular geological heritage and with a sustainable territorial development....the ultimate aim of a European Geopark is to bring enhanced employment opportunities for the people who live there." Today the geopark is virtually synonymous with the UNESCO geopark, which is defined and managed under the voluntary authority of UNESCO's International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP).
