The Sandinist Television System (Sistema Sandinista de Televisión -SSTV) was a television network in Nicaragua, owned and operated by the government from 1979 to 1990. History When the Sandinistas overthrew the Somoza regime in Nicaragua in 1979, there were only two private television stations broadcasting in Nicaragua. Televicentro (Canal 2), founded in 1965 and owned by Televicentro de Nicaragua, S.A. of the Sacasa family and Canal 6 owned by the Somoza family and founded in 1959. The SSTV was officially constituted by law on February 10, 1984 but both TV stations were confiscated by the Sandinista government already in July 1979 and the SSTV existed ''de facto'' since then. Somoza
The Somoza family ( es, Familia Somoza) is a former political family that ruled Nicaragua for forty-three years from 1936 to 1979. Their family dictatorship was founded by Anastasio Somoza García and was continued by his two sons Luis Somoza Debayle and Anastasio Somoza Debayle. Anastasio Somoza García was the President of Nicaragua from 1937 until 1956. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Luis Somoza Debayle, who held the presidency from 1957 to 1963. The youngest Somoza son, Anastasio Somoza Debayle, held two presidential terms: 1967-1972 and 1974-1979. Televicentro (Canal 2)
Canal 2 is a Nicaraguan free-to-air television network owned by Televicentro de Nicaragua, S.A. History Televicentro de Nicaragua, S.A. was founded in December 1965 by Octavio Sacasa Sarria and started broadcasting in March 1966. It was the third television channel in Nicaragua after Channel 6, owned by the Somoza family. Televicentro started broadcasting in colour in 1973. With the triumph of the Sandinista revolution in July 1979, Channel 2 together with Channel 6 were expropriated by the Sandinista government and turned into the Sistema Sandinista de Televisión (SSTV), ''the Sandinista Television System''. Canal 6 is a Nicaraguan terrestrial television channel broadcasting from the city of Managua. The station claims to be owned by the Government of Nicaragua, but is actually owned by a joint stock company called NEPISA (Negocios Publicitarios Internacionales) History Canal 6 started broadcasting on January 17, 1957, as Nicaragua's second television channel, after channel 8 that signed on the year before. It was owned by Salvadora Debayle de Somoza and Lilliam Somoza de Sevilla, daughter of the then president Anastasio Somoza Garcia. In 1962, its programming was seen on channel 8 after a decision to merge the two extant channels. Violeta Chamorro
Violeta Barrios Torres de Chamorro (; 18 October 1929) is a Nicaraguan politician who served as President of Nicaragua from 1990 to 1997. She was the first and, as of 2022, only woman to hold the position of president of Nicaragua. Born into a landed family in southern Nicaragua, Chamorro was partially educated in the United States. After returning to her home country, she married and raised a family. Her husband, Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal, was a journalist working at his family's newspaper, ''La Prensa'', which he later inherited. Arnoldo Alemán
José Arnoldo Alemán Lacayo (born 23 January 1946) is a Nicaraguan politician who served as the 81st president of Nicaragua from 10 January 1997 to 10 January 2002. In 2003, he was convicted of corruption and sentenced to a 20-year prison term; the conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court of Nicaragua in 2009.
