Sissala East (Ghana Parliament Constituency)
Sissala East is one of the constituencies represented in the Parliament of Ghana. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. Sissala East is located in the Sissala East Municipal of the Upper West Region of Ghana. This seat was created prior to the Ghanaian parliamentary election in 2004. Boundaries The seat is located within the Sissala East District of the Upper West Region of Ghana. Its northern neighbour is Burkina Faso. To the north west is the Sissala West constituency and the Wa East is to the south west. From north to south along the eastern border lie the Chiana-Paga constituency in the Kassena/Nankana District and the Builsa North and Builsa South constituencies in the Builsa District, all within the Upper East Region. Sissala East Municipal District is one of the eleven districts in Upper West Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Sissala District in 1988; until the western part of the district was later split off to create Sissala West District in July 2004; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Sissala East District Sissala East Municipal District is one of the eleven districts in Upper West Region, Ghana. 2008 Ghanaian Parliamentary Election
General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2008. Since no candidate received more than 50% of the votes, a run-off election was held on 28 December 2008 between the two candidates who received the most votes, Nana Akufo-Addo of the governing New Patriotic Party and John Atta Mills of the opposition National Democratic Congress. Mills was certified as the victor by a margin of less than one percent, winning the presidency on his third attempt. It is to date the closest election in Ghanaian history. The People's National Convention is a political party in Ghana. After constitutional rule was restored back in Ghana in 1992 the party was formed by former President Hilla Limann based on ideals from the People's National Party (Ghana) which he led in the 1979 elections and won. National Democratic Congress (Ghana)
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a social democratic political party in Ghana, founded by Jerry Rawlings, who was Head of State of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the President of Ghana from 1993 to 2001. Following the formation of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), which ruled Ghana following the military coup d'état on 31 December 1981, there was pressure from the international community to restore democracy. The NDC was formed as the ruling party ahead of elections in 1992, in which Rawlings was elected president, and in 1996 Rawlings was re-elected as the NDC candidate. Rawlings' second term ended in 2001. The NDC lost the presidency in the 2000 election, and it was not until the 2008 election, that they regained it with John Atta Mills as its candidate. 1992 Ghanaian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Ghana on 29 December 1992, the first since 1979. Voter turnout was just 28.1% amidst a boycott by opposition parties, who had claimed the preceding presidential elections in November – won by former military ruler Jerry Rawlings with 58% of the vote – were fraudulent, with international observers considering them not to have been conducted in a free and fair manner. The result was a victory for Rawlings's National Democratic Congress, which won 189 of the 200 seats. The Electoral Commission of Ghana(EC) is the official body in Ghana responsible for all public elections. Made up of seven members, its independence is guaranteed by the 1992 Ghana constitution. The current commission was established by the Electoral Commission Act (Act 451) of 1993. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan was the first substantive chairman of the commission from 1993 to 2015. The Upper East Region is located in north Ghana and is the third smallest of the 16 administrative regions in Ghana. Builsa District is a former district that was located in Upper East Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988.
