Sirpur Lake
Sirpur Lake is located on Indore-Dhar Road in Indore. The total area of the lake and its surrounding protected region is 800 acres (around 3.6 square kilometers) and falls under the jurisdiction of the Indore Municipal Corporation. The wetland has been designated as a Ramsar site under the Ramsar Convention on 07-01-2022. History Sirpur Lake was created by the Holkars of Indore State in the early 20th century. After the independence of India and extinction of the royal houses, religious sites started mushrooming up around the lake and over the years it was encroached upon by the people living in its vicinity. Illegal activities like fishing, poaching, cattle grazing, waste dumping, etc., almost destroyed the lake's ecology. Restoration The potential of the lake as a significant bird habitat was recognized by the Holkars of Indore. List Of Ramsar Sites In India
There are 75 Ramsar sites in India. These are wetlands deemed to be of "international importance" under the Ramsar Convention. For a full list of all Ramsar sites worldwide, see the List of Ramsar wetlands of international importance. According to WWF-India, wetlands are one of the most threatened of all ecosystems in India. Loss of vegetation, salinization, excessive inundation, water pollution, invasive species, excessive development and road building, have all damaged the country's wetlands. Yashwant Sagar is a dam reservoir on Gambhir river, located around 26 kilometers west of Indore near Hatod village on Indore-Depalpur road in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh. It supplies water to Indore. It is spread over around 2,650 hectares. It was built in 1939. It is one of the strongholds of the vulnerable Sarus crane in central India. It is also one of the 19 Important Bird Areas of Madhya Pradesh. Also it is one of the two IBAs in Indore region as well as one of the most important birding sites in Malwa. Ruddy Shelduck
The ruddy shelduck (''Tadorna ferruginea''), known in India as the Brahminy duck, is a member of the family Anatidae. It is a distinctive waterfowl, in length with a wingspan of . It has orange-brown body plumage with a paler head, while the tail and the flight feathers in the wings are black, contrasting with the white wing-coverts. It is a migratory bird, wintering in the Indian subcontinent and breeding in southeastern Europe and central Asia, though there are small resident populations in North Africa. Bhalchandra Dattatray Mondhe (born 15 March 1944) is an Indian artist, photographer, sculptor and painter from Madhya Pradesh. In 2016, the President of India bestowed upon him the Padma Shri award for his lifetime work in photography. He has authored two books, including ''Birds of Sirpur'', which he co-authored. Mondhe co-founded an NGO to save the Sirpur Lake, The Nature Volunteers, which is credited with reviving the Sirpur Lake. Early life and career Mondhe first encountered photography when he was 17. He subsequently became passionate about photography during his youth. In a 2016 feature on him by the ''Hindustan Times'', Mondhe said that he used the camera to encapsulate his vision, adding, "I have never considered the camera and the lens as a burden to carry, but as my extension".
