Sirinivasa
Sirinivasa is the official residence of the Mayor of Colombo. It is located on Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha (formerly Edinburgh Crescent), Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo, Sri Lanka. The mansion was originally built by Mudaliyar Simon Fernando Sri Chandrasekera (1829–1908), who left his entire estate in trust to the Ceylon government. The building was used to house the Colombo Public Library from 1935 until a new building was constructed in 1990, adjoining Viharamahadevi Park (formerly Victoria Park). Following the transfer of the library the building was converted to become the official residence of the Mayor of Colombo. Mayor Of Colombo
The Mayor of Colombo is the Mayor (and head) of the Colombo Municipal Council. The post was created in 1866 when the Colombo Municipal Council was established by the Legislative Council of Ceylon. The Mayor is assisted by the Deputy Mayor and a Municipal Commissioner. Since 1944 the majority of the mayors have been from the United National Party. Election The mayor is elected in a general election held under the ''Local Authority Election Ordinance'' from the party gaining the highest number of seats in the municipal council. Once elected the mayor may hold office for four years. Powers and functions Most powers are derived from the ''Municipal Council Ordinance No. 29 of 1947''. Park House is the official residence of the Municipal Commissioner of Colombo. The 16 bedroom mansion, is located on Albert Crescent, Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was the former official residence of the Mayor of Colombo till 1990 when the residence was shifted to Sirinivasa. Former Municipal Commissioner Badrani Jayawardena has been in residence since 2010, even after she left the post of Municipal Commissioner in 2015. Colombo Public Library
Colombo Public Library is the largest public library in Sri Lanka, located in Colombo 07, Sri Lanka. History The first public library in the country was the 'United Service Library', which was established in 1813. It was exclusively used by civil and military officers of the Government stationed in Colombo and was housed in a building opposite the Queen's House on Janadhipathi Mawatha (formerly Kings Street). In 1829 the burghers opened the 'Colombo Pettah Library' in Pettah. On 1 October 1924 E. W. Jayawardena moved a resolution at the Colombo Municipal Council to establish the Colombo Library. The Colonial Secretary, Sir Cecil Clementi, called a meeting of subscribers of both libraries and it was agreed to hand over their books to the new library, which was to be run as a department of the Colombo Council. Simon Fernando Sri Chandrasekera
Mudaliyar Simon Fernando Sri Chandrasekera (1829–1908) was a prominent businessman during the late 19th century in Sri Lanka. Born Singho Appu Baasunnahe in the village of Horetuduwa in Moratuwa. He started life making tea chests and moved into other businesses. He built Sirinivasa which was gifted by him to the city of Colombo and is the current official residence of the Mayor of Colombo. His daughter married Dr W. A. de Silva. His other relations included Sir Susantha de Fonseka, Cissy Cooray and H. W. Ceylonese Mudaliyars
Mudali (or Mudaliyar) was a colonial title and office in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) which was part of the native headman system. The Portuguese colonials created the Mudaliyar class in the 17th century by enlisting natives of different castes from the coastal areas. The Dutch continued the practice of the Portuguese. This class used the ''Mudali'' as a hereditary title, however the British re-established a Mudaliyar class, with appointments that had the title of Mudali, this process was stopped in the 1930s when the Native Department of the British government of Ceylon was closed down. All official and titular appointments of Mudaliyars were made by the Governor of Ceylon. Temple Trees is the official residence of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. It is located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Several recent Presidents have used it as their official residence as well. History Private residence The history of ''Temple Trees'' dates back to early 19th century. Its ownership passed through several prominent British administrators and traders. It was owned between 1830 and 1834 by John Walbeoff of the British Civil Service, who headed the Cinnamon Department of Ceylon. Viharamahadevi Park
Viharamahadevi Park ( si, විහාරමහාදේවී උද්යානය; formerly Victoria Park, si, වික්ටෝරියා පාක්) is a public park located in Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo, situated in front of the colonial-era Town Hall in Sri Lanka. It was built by the British colonial administration and is the oldest and largest park of Colombo. The park was originally named "Victoria Park" after Queen Victoria but was renamed after Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugamunu on July 18, 1958. During World War II it was occupied by the British Army with Australian 17th Brigade based at Victoria Park. After the war the park was restored and open to the public in 1951. Mansion
A mansion is a large dwelling house. The word itself derives through Old French from the Latin word ''mansio'' "dwelling", an abstract noun derived from the verb ''manere'' "to dwell".
