Sir William Agnew, 1st Baronet
Sir William Agnew, 1st Baronet (20 October 1825 – 31 October 1910) was an English politician and art dealer. Thomas Agnew & Sons, his London art business in Mayfair flourished as one of the leading art dealerships in London from 1860, until it closed in April 2013, still with the Agnew family involved, and still known as "Agnew's Gallery", or more informally "Agnew's". Career In the middle of the 1860s, Agnew and his brother Thomas provided much needed financial backing to the publishing firm Bradbury and Evans, becoming partners in the business. Agnew became a Liberal member of parliament, first for South East Lancashire between 1880 and 1885 and later for Stretford from 1885 to 1886. He was created a baronet, of Great Stanhope Street, London, in 1895. He bought the Rougham estates in Suffolk, England, in 1904. The Honourable Algernon Fulke Egerton (31 December 1825 – 14 July 1891), known as Algernon Leveson-Gower until 1833, was a British Conservative politician from the Egerton family. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. A baronetcy is the only British hereditary honour that is not a peerage, with the exception of the Anglo-Irish Black Knights, White Knights, and Green Knights (of whom only the Green Knights are extant). Sir John Maclure, 1st Baronet
Sir John William Maclure, 1st Baronet (22 April 1835 – 28 January 1901), was a British businessman and Conservative politician. Biography Maclure was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Brasenose College, Oxford, but left university without taking a degree due to ill health. He later became manager of the Guardian Insurance Company and was also Secretary of the Cotton Famine Relief Fund during the Lancashire Cotton famine in the early 1860s. He played an important role for the revival of Conservatism in Manchester and served as President of the Conservative Association of South and East Lancashire. In the 1885 general election he unsuccessfully contested Stretford, but was successfully returned for the same constituency in the 1886 general election, and held the seat until his death. The 1886 United Kingdom general election took place from 1 to 27 July 1886, following the defeat of the Government of Ireland Bill 1886. It resulted in a major reversal of the results of the 1885 election as the Conservatives, led by Lord Salisbury, were joined in an electoral pact with the breakaway Unionist wing of the Liberals led by Lord Hartington (later the Duke of Devonshire) and Joseph Chamberlain. The new Liberal Unionist party gave the Conservatives their parliamentary majority but did not join them in a formal coalition. William Ewart Gladstone's Liberals, who supported the Irish Home Rule movement, and their sometimes allies the Irish Parliamentary Party, led by Charles Stewart Parnell, were placed a distant second. Robert Leake (1824 – 1 May 1901) was a British Liberal politician. Leake was the eldest son of Robert Leake of Manchester and Mary Lockett of Salford, Lancashire.
