Sir Walter Barttelot, 1st Baronet
Sir Walter Barttelot, 1st Baronet, (10 October 1820 – 2 February 1893) was a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom who served as Member of Parliament for several constituencies. Life A member of an ancient Sussex family, Barttelot was the son of George Barttelot and his wife Emma (née Woodbridge). He was educated at Rugby School and then served in the 1st Royal Dragoons, purchasing his captaincy on 7 February 1845. After retirement from the army he raised the 6th (Petworth) Sussex Rifle Volunteer Corps on 15 February 1860 and was promoted to major to command the 2nd Administrative Battalion, Sussex Rifle Volunteer Corps on 26 April 1860.''Army List'', various dates. Stopham
Stopham is a hamlet and civil parish in the District of Chichester in West Sussex, England, about west of Pulborough on the A283 road. It is in the civil parish of Fittleworth. The parish has a land area of . The 2001 Census recorded 87 people living in 39 households, of whom 40 were economically active. Manor The Domesday Book of 1086 records a manor of Stopham or ''Stopeham''. Descendants of the same family, the Bartletts or Barttelots, who married the senior co-heir of the Stophams in 1379, have ensured that the same lineage, albeit with a different surname, has held the manor since the Norman Conquest of England. Since 1875 they have been baronets. Part of the present manor house is dated 1485, but there was a house on the site before that. Henry Wyndham, 2nd Baron Leconfield, (31 July 1830 – 6 January 1901) was a British peer and Conservative Member of Parliament. A direct descendant of Sir John Wyndham, Leconfield was the eldest son of George Wyndham, 1st Baron Leconfield, and Mary Fanny Blunt. The Barttelot Baronetcy, of Stopham in the County of West Sussex, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. History The Baronetage was created on 14 June 1875 for the Conservative politician Walter Barttelot. The family surname is pronounced "Bartlot". Dame Edith Harriet, Lady Sclater, DBE (''née'' Barttelot; 24 March 1856 – 29 March 1927) was a British philanthropist. Early life and family Sclater was born at Hilliers in Petworth into an ancient Sussex family. She was the second and eldest surviving daughter of Sir Walter Barttelot, who was created a baronet in 1875, and Harriet Musgrave, daughter of Rev. Sir Christopher Musgrave, 9th Baronet. The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR; known also as the Brighton line, the Brighton Railway or the Brighton) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1846 to 1922.
